well I guess that sums up why you can't hardly find 165 but 180 seems readily available everywhere.

180 for me; not that I would hesitate to use 165.

I was at the range recently and fired off several rounds of hollow points each of different types of ammo to get a feel for each through my Sig P229:
Remington Golden Sabers 180g Remington JHPs 165g Hornady TAP FPD 155g Cor-bon DPX 140g Then about 100 Georgia Arms 165g FMJs. Honestly, I could not feel the slightest difference between any of these rounds even though I was looking for it. There was no extra recoil or "snap" from any of them. Any slight difference between any of these rounds would have been so insignificant that it was undetectable. So why am I the only one who feels this way? Is it the gun I'm using, the types of ammo, or is it just me? I'm a bit confused here. |

I basically feel the same way. To me, the difference in the bullet weight is really only relevant to your preferred choice of velocity to size.
If I was shooting out of a full length 226 barrel or full sized USP. I would shoot 180 gr. Since my only 40 gun is a HK P2000, i prefer the 165gr. Not because 180 would be a "poor performer" out the slightly shorter barrel, but because i just choose the have a slightly lighter bullet. If I was shooting an even smaller gun, like a karh, p2000sk baby glock, i might move down even further to a 155 gr. That to me is where bullet weight matters. The shorter the barrel, the lighter the bullet. 1) When you lose barrel length you can lose velocity 2) I choose to try and offset that with lighter bullets Not the only opinion, but that’s how I feel about it. 180 - Like others, I find it's easier to control.

I have a slight preference, overall, for 165, but my SIG P229s shoot to POA better with 180s.

This is my favorite gun related topic!
my favorite round of all is 165 grain Golden Saber in .40 cal. If it were not available, then I'm OK with Corbon or another quality 165 grain, and failing that I would go to 180 grain. It might not matter at all, I just like the round. __________________________ "The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing." |

For punching holes in paper, whatever is cheaper (165 or 180). For SD/HD 165 in gold dot, HST or Ranger T . . .

I tend to prefer 180's for practice and 165's for self defense.
I was just checking out the ATK LE website, when did Speer (or anyone) start loading 40S&W in 200gr? They have Lawman and Gold Dot listed. Moving at 915 fps. I thought 180 was as high as you could safely go? |

"NEW Winchester 40 S/W 180 GRAIN
Bonded Jacketed Hollow Point Ammunition (Boxes of 50). Stock # Q4369" ... seems to be the rage with the FB&I. Now they will sell a ton of it, "just because". Don't Let The Smoke Get In Your Eyes |

binky...
Double tap also loads a 200 gr. in 40S&W. quite a bit hotter than the Speer offering. SAMMI pressures have more to do with the " safety " not bullet weight. and as weight goes up the drop over a certain range will be affected so POA / POI will change. naturally the heavier round will almost always be lower. not that that will matter much at bad breath distances. cold on ice it's a Deadman's touch |
