700 Police LTR .223 1:9 twist 20" barrel.

Looking for some accurate long range heavier factory loads.

69 gr. 75gr. 77 gr. How heavy have you gone with a 1:9 twist?

What have you had good experience with.

Can't help you. There's plenty of info on barrel twist for ARs, but that's not a common question for a bolt action.

The heaviest I've gone with my 1:9 twist is 62 grains. It's my understanding, I could be wrong that twist is not ideal for the 77 grain projo's. I'd stick to 69 grains.

I have had very good results with the 64 grain Speer Gold Dot, for a non-match round. I have also had equally excellent results with the 55 grain Hornady TAP, all at 100 yards.

I think I will pick up some 69 grain match stuff and see how that works out. Will post results when I have a chance to get out and shoot it.

With my S&W M&P 5.56 (1 in 9) I get my best groups - and I am NOT making this up - from PMC .223 55 grain.

In 1/9, I'd look at Black Hills, twice. Their 68gr OTM and their loading of the 69gr SMKs should do quite nicely. 50rd boxes are also easier on the wallet, and mind.

Onethirtyeight and all,

I have the 1:9" twist barrel on my factory Winchester Stealth. I handload all my ammo, but the 69 Gr. Sierra Match King shoots fantastically from the rifle. Any quality load with this bullet should do well. Try Federal Match ammo or Black Hills Ammunition.

My load of a 69 gr SMK, Federal brass(match prep'd) 24.4 Gr. Vihtavouri N140, and a Federal 205 match primer print consistently under 1/2" @ 100 yards with this rifle.

I can't get my Savage BT112 Competition 1:9 twist, in .223 to shoot 69g heads worth a damn.
It will put 5 shots of 55g Berger HP into 1/4-1/3" group at 100 yards.

The type of action has no bearing on what bullet works well with what twist.

Conventional wisdom would suggest the 69 grain bullets will stabilize in that twist, but that the bullets getting close to 80 grains will not.

.223 ammo isn't really a budget buster. Guns are individuals. Buy a box of factory loaded ammo in the various weights you can find. Then a pad of targets, and go shooting. Its a better method than guessing, or asking others how their guns work.

There was some pretty heavy traffic on AR-15.com about this subject a couple of years ago. Bottom line is a 20" 1\9 twist barrel may stabilize rounds as heavy as 75gr. You have to test your rifle to find out. I know some shooters that are using 75gr rounds out of 1\9 barrel, but it's a 26" length and the loads are on the hot side.
