I just picked up my first 22-250. (Ruger M77 Mk II Target) I really like the round and the way the gun shoots (very flat shooting out to 300 yards), I put about 50 rounds through it today and I could not be happier. The 20X Leupold is also a nice touch.
Anyways, I have heard the life expectancy of the barrel on the 22-250 can be as low as 1000 rounds due to the high velocity and pressure (4000 fps). What is the truth to this matter and is there anything to help increase the barrel life (I like to shoot a lot) The barrel is a stainless steel heavy barrel. I have heard Moly coated bullets help. |

Depends on your use - If you are shooting precision rifle in competition then the loss of accuracy at the 2000-2500 round mark will show. If you are just shooting at targets and maybe varmints then just shoot it. My hunting 22-250 served up great accuracy for a long time - high round count on the range and hunting.

My usual response is if you can afford to shoot enough to wear out a barrel you can afford another barrel. Enjoy your rifle!

That's a nice set-up. I have the same rifle, but the 6.5 X 20 Leupold on mine. I reload 40gr Nosler ballistic tips and I get very good results.
Have fun. ___________________________________ SIGS - Yes, I have less than modiecast |

I know a few guys who shoot the 22-250 locally and all shoot it a lot, none have mentioned barrel wear being a problem, they shoot a lot and they shoot year round,
One guy I know makes about 4-5 gopher trips a year (averages about 1,000 rounds each trip) and shoots crows and coyotes the rest of the year. He's still working on his first barrel and he's been at it for 6 years now that I know of. Chance favors the prepared mind |
