Sow how many rounds down the barrel before you feel it is ok to use as a PD round?

This question received some recent discussion here.

To reiterate my own position, I believe that for a SIG pistol, about 200 rounds is adequate, barring any unusual circumstances. That's a modest number, though, and more certainly can't hurt.

I do disagree with those who claim to think that 1000 or even more rounds are necessary. I believe figures like that are simply pulled out of the air (if not elsewhere) and have no rational basis other than being a large round number. Numbers like that are particularly difficult to imagine when people talk about employing multiple handguns "in rotation."

If someone can afford to shoot ammunition in those quantities for multiple guns, I submit they would be better off purchasing two identical weapons, thoroughly testing one for carry purposes, and using the other for training, practice, and as a spare for the primary.

I notice, BTW, that this thread hasn't generated much interest. That may be because the title doesn't really indicate what it's about. You might think about changing the title to something like, "How many rounds before relying on a gun for self-defense?"

Do you mean breaking the pistol in, then shooting PD rounds, or how many PD rounds thru the pistol to be confident in it? If your pistol is reliable w/ practice ammo, then 50 or 60rds,(depnds on box count)thru my carry mags is good for me. Who is to say a failure is going to happen at 51, 101, 201 or 1001? Just make sure all your carry mags work full up w/ your chosen round. Even the revolvers get tested, just not as many rounds. Three cyl. full as fast as I can load & shoot, good to go.

IF YOU AREN'T HANDLOADING, YOU AREN'T SHOOTING ENOUGH! If you could make your own gas, wouldn't you???

I'm with sigfreund, if you can put 200 trouble free rounds through a Sig you should be good to go. Bearing in mind that you want to rotate all the magazines you plan on using during the break in period. That way you know both the pistol and all important mags are gonna work.
And make sure they function with your chosen hollow point defensive load.

I have got 650 rounds thru it so far on my P226 in 40S&W. Not one hiccup. They have been a mix of WW FMJ, Fiocchi FMJ, Speer Lawman FMJ, Federal FMJ. I have been loading for HD with Remington JHP with which I have put 100 of these thru with no problems. Do to the increase residential break-ins in our town I am considering upgrading to the more expensive PD Ammo. Looking at using Gold Dots. Was wondering how many of these need to be put down the pipe before confident on their ability too feed properly?

Thanks

Just about any pistol will feed a FMJ load, it's JHP's that usually cause a pistol to burp.
200 rds minimum of JHP for me.
