Is it possible? Does anyone make a can that will do it? Is there such a thing as commercial 30-06 subsonic ammunition?
I'm wondering if a .308 can would work with 30-06. I believe the bullets are the same, but will the can handle the difference between the two rounds? |

I bet most any .308 can will handled .30-06. There's very little ballistic difference between the two cartridges.

Depending on the powder used '06 can have a larger volume of powder gasses so its a little harder to suppress than the .308. Bullet diameters are identical at .308 and standard ball ammo uses the same weight bullet-147gr. You should be able to safely use a .308 can on an '06.
Subsonic ammo for the '06 is definately a problem. It is difficult for .308 because of excessive case volume so going to an '06 case makes matters worse. The problem lies in finding a powder that will sufficiently fill the case while not overloading the round for its intended purpose of subsonic velocity. Too little powder can cause all manner of problems including the inexplicable "detonation" effect. At best you end up with very poor ignition or inconsistant velocities due to powder placement in the case. Some people use wadding to retain the powder against the primer but too much wadding creates another problem because it also has weight that must be considered and many types of wadding will foul the bore or chamber. This problem is the reason for the popularity of the small cased .30 cals like the 7.62X39 or the 30-221 (.300 whisper) types. These use a smaller capacity case with a large heavy bullet to obtain efficient burning of faster powders. Accuracy is very good and at least with the whisper you can get good consistant subsonic velocity with bullets down to 150gr without too much trouble. Check out the quarterbore.com site for more info on the whisper and other subs. Hope that answers the questions. Frank |

Might be too high a pressure with the magnum cartridge. AAC, and probably others, has dedicated "big bore" cans for 300 WM (and 338 LM). Oat ---------------------------- Chuck Norris put the laughter in "manslaughter" Educating the youth of America, one declension at a time. |

AAC makes cans that will handle .50 BMG.
Regarding the .300 WSM, the rifle in the foreground of this photo was built for SEALs. It's chambered for .300 WSM, and the suppressor mounted on it is by Knight's. And suppressing the .30-06? Old news. Take a look at this "deactivated" Maxim model 15 silencer mounted to an '03 Springfield sniper rifle. I was recently able to examine a sectioned Maxim Model 15 identical to this one. I don't know if these would rightly be considered DEWATs, or more accurately, perhaps, as "salesman's samples". At any rate, I found it interesting that the BATFE considers silencers so cut to still be silencers, with all the attendant paperwork. I've also seen in a book a picture of a Maxim Model 15 that was destroyed during testing. IIRC, it was at Frankford Arsenal or some place like that, many years ago. http://wamsherhistoricalfirearms.com/inventory_details.asp?ITEM_ID=48 |

You'd have to contact Knight's for any information. For all I know, that can is a one of a kind.

What do you think of Jet suppressors? Any other cans you'd recommend for a dedicated tactical rifle because of personal experience or 2nd hand info from trusted friends? Considering weight, flash/sound suppression, QD attachment on muzzle brake, customer service. I'd really appreciate any input as I'm in the market for one.

I couldn't tell you. I admit a very strong bias toward's AAC's products, as these guys are my friends. I get to see a bit behind the scenes with AAC. Those guys are dedicated to making an ever-improved product.
Ask over at Silencer Talk. You'll find a mountain of information there. |
