When you register a SBR, you become the Manufacturer. Therefore, your engraving would be something like this (name, city, state):
Joe Public Dallas, Texas If you are registering under a Trust or Corporation, use that name instead of your real name. The engraving must be on the receiver in a spot that is visible WITHOUT disassembly. Letters must be at least 1/16" tall and engraving at a depth of .003" or more. Hope this helps. _________________________________________ "The 2nd Amendment is the final latchkey that holds government accountable to WE THE PEOPLE. I'd add a plug for Orion Arms Custom Engraving. Ryan does excellent work.
My AR cost $46 shipped to engrave. |

Couple points of clarification. You can use your initials. Same with city/state. Call up your PD or FD and ask them what 3 letter code do they use. Example for John Public JP DAL TX The engraving must be .003" into the METAL. This excludes the coating, whatever it may be. So it may end up being .007" or more when you include the coating of the metal. mark Alan Keyes is as Pro-Gun as they come! Even Automatics! Where did you get this information? If you register a lower you bought like a RRA, STAG, whatever as a SBR. That company is still the manufacturer of the weapon. You are not required to engrave your name initials anything like that anywhere. The name of the mfg. and the serial number are already on the weapon. If you fill out your forms correctly you are not required to engrave anything. The only time you become the manufacturer is if you actually manufacturer the lower, like finish an 80% receiver. If you are forging your own lowers then yes you must engrave it. From the footnotes of the form 1 Im looking at right now h. Serial numbers and other Markings. If an existing firearm is being modified into an NFA firearm, enter the existing serial number of the firearm into item 4g and the name and address of the original manufacturer into item 4a. If the NFA firearm is being made from parts, your name and address are to be entered into 4a and a serial number you create is to be entered into item 4g. If you write your information on the form instead of the correct info, then yes you must engrave it on the lower. I personally would never engrave, or pay someone to engrave my name and address into a receiver. Especially if the people I was registering it with told me I didnt have to. |

You are just plain wrong. Period. When you register an SBR it must have the name of the OWNER engraved and the city, state as well. No one should listen to this person as he obviously has no idea what he is talking about. I am not really sure why there are still people out there who fight the idea of SBR engraving. http://www.m4orum.com/SMF_Forum/index.php?topic=21.0 It IS a requirement, you must do it prior to the assembly of your weapon, if you don't YOU ARE BREAKING THE LAW! |

You are 100% correct. Just because an examiner does not do the paperwork correctly, does not reduce the requirement for you to follow the law. Read the regulations, not the incorrect form 1... I have the letter from the ATF clarifying this point, I am trying to figure out how to post it (it is an image in a word doc). I think I got it from Uzi talk or some other NFA forum. When you do a form 1 you become the maker of the firearm as an SBR, you can use the exiting serial #, but as the maker of the SBR you must engrave your info as the Mfg. I know some out there disagree, but I will figure out a way to post and you can decide for yourself. |

Hey thanks, great link I guess. Try this one http://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=18422
You call me out and say that is absolutely untrue. OK I can be mistaken. But Im reading my form 1, and if I fill it out the way it instructs me too. Then my name and a made up serial number will not be anywhere on the receiver. SO.. what law requires me to engrave it once my stamp comes back???? Thanks in advance. ETA: martin we posted at the same time, please do post this as soon as you figure out how. Thanks |

ok so they admit that they were wrong in advising you that you HAD to identify the firearm with your name city and state?? But if you still want to do it the barrel is an acceptable place for it.
Thanks for posting this, hope it clears it up for you guys ETA: I would say the 3rd and 4th paragraphs are very applicable in this discussion |

Actually it doesnt make anything easier. If you read the letter its actually pretty cut and dry. If your making an sbr on form1 adopt the orginal mfg's serial number importer markings, model designation, and caliber markings. Our advice that no additional requirements for marking are correct. We were remiss (negligent) in advising you to mark your weapon with your name, city and state.?? So either the ATF is completely retarded, or you dont have to mark the weapon.

The OP on uzitalk came to the opposite conclusion. |

People get confused between title I firearms regulations and title II firearms regulations.
Title II regulations requires make, S/N, caliber, manufacturer, city and state. Notice model is not REQUIRED and is optional. Even if you take a title I firearm you "made" (i.e. 80%, etc.) you must then engrave it accordingly with title II required information, since you are the manufacturer. mark Alan Keyes is as Pro-Gun as they come! Ok, after all the reading, it seems to be very unclear. Why go through the hassle if it is unclear. It is quite simple to get it engraved then blacked out on the front of the magwell (in the case of an AR receiver) so why put yourself in jeopardy?

The bottom line is this. If you "create" the SBR then YOU are the "maker"...PERIOD. Thus, you are required to put your info on the receiver, regardless of the 'orginal manufacturer' of the upper and lower. Read the back of the Form 1. It has a box to list the 'Orginal Manufacturer and markings'. This logically implies there is a 'Secondary Manufacturer'! HELLO
