I have a few pistol caliber cans, Evo 9mm and Outback II. When I started shooing a few years ago, I shoot only indoors. The cans made a huge difference. But now that I am shooting outdoors, while they do quiet the gun, it is not as noticable as indoors.
I have recently aquired my first rifle, a LWRC M6A2 in 5.56/.223. I am thinking about the 7.62 can for use on this and probably a REPR in 7.62x51 down the road. But after shooting my pistol cans outdoors, I am wondering if I should even bother? I have not shot a rifle with a can on it. Is it going be a big difference? Or will it be similar to my pistol cans outdoors? |

If you use a 5.56 can on your LWRC 5.56 you will get back-gas/squirt-eye out of the charging handle port. I can definitively say this because I run an M4-2000 on my LWRC.
Using a 7.62x51 can will get you less squirt-eye, but the sound suppression will not be quite as good. The number one negative to doing this (using a 7.62x51 can on a 5.56 gun) is that the can is heavier and longer than it needs to be--and that's your call as to whether it's a big deal to you or not. I personally can't recommend it because my 16" barrel + M4 2000 = the same length as a 20" barrel with 1" flash hider. The SD may be designed differently, but you are still getting something that is over built and necessarily too heavy for the application. If you can, try handling an AR carbine with suppressor attached. You'll get a good feel as to whether you want heavier or lighter. The benefits of shooting outdoords with a can will likely be less than shooting indoors, at least in terms of shooter's perception. Indoors, no contest, you're going to get reverb and all that. After all shooting indoors is sort of like being inside a giant suppressor when the gun goes off. BTW, I managed to solve the back-gas problem relatively simply (with the right inspiration). But the weight and length issues are still there. |

I run 7.62 SD's on my AR rifles....
I SBR'd mine....the 11.5 inch barrel on the AR with the 7.62SD is plenty quiet, and it balances well on the SBR..on a 16 inch barrel it seems pretty muzzle heavy to me... |

LDD, how did you fix that gas blow back to your face? I already purchased a PRI gas buster charging handle. Still getting gas directly to my face. I have a 9.25 inch POF upper and AAC M4-2000 (if that makes a difference). |

I wish you'd asked me before you'd spent money on the gasbuster, but I can't blame you because I made the same mistake many years ago (and I still have the gas buster and use it, but it's not really a necessary or effective solution IMO). Here's my post on the topic: http://sigforum.com/eve/forums...=345104051#345104051 (might have to scroll down a bit, but there's a photo) Just remember that you want the foam to squish a little when the charging handle is stowed @ the "in" position. If it doesn't squish you're not getting a good enough seal. Email if you have any questions, I'd be happy to give more details if you feel like you need them. |

i like cans but they typically require subsonic ammo (typically heavier grains) to be truly appreciated otherwise you still get the sonic crack from bullet velocity. i enjoy shooting pistol calibers without hearing protection indoors or out, rifle caliber is a different animal due the the higher velocity ammo. a can in 223 will definitely knock down muzzle report but you're still going to get loud cracks from bullet velocity. most subsonics in 223 are fairly anemic that they won't cycle the bcg, although there is specialty 223 ammo floating around. imo cans on sbr's at 10-12 inches are a must, especially if used indoors but not so much on 16 inch + barrel partly due the additional barrel length making it unwieldy. shooting an sbr in enclosed spaces can be quite concussive. you can get some decent subsonic 308 though. plus you can use the 308 can with other calibers such as 6.8 & 223. your call if it's worth the $900 or so to you. |

I have an '07 SD on my FAL with 11.5" & 17,5" barrels, I find it quite usefull. Though gas blowback is present.
