How well does 40S&W lend itself to being suppressed?
I have a USPf 45ACP that I have been thinking about suppressing but I shoot 40S&W much more often and I have heard that 45 even when suppressed is still quite loud. I have seen suppressors for 40S&W pistols but I dont know much about their performance. Ok last question, Given the minimal difference in size between a 9mm and 40S&W and the fact that I would love to avoid buying two suppressors, can you also suppress 9mm effectivly with a 40S&W suppressor? ~~~GO COLTS~~~ |

.45ACP is probably one of the most easily suppressed rounds (read quieter), because it's sub-sonic (Muzzle velocity is less than the speed of sound ~1100 fps at STP).
On the other hand, .40S&W is generally a super sonic round (Muzzle velocity greater than the speed of sound) and is therefore less quiet when suppressed. This is because any round traveling greater than the speed of sound will create a sonic crack (think an airplane breaking the sound barrier: sonic boom). I've shot both a .45 and a .223/5.56 suppressed, but never a .40S&W, the .45's were very quite and the 5.56 was relatively quiet (still a sonic crack, but not a deafening Muzzle report) HTH Regards, Storm This message has been edited. I have shot a 40 through an evo40 and it is relatively quiet with the heavy projectiles. Relatively quiet means only a little louder than 9mm 147 and quieter than any factory loaded 45 ammo I have tried.
Theoretically, you can run a 9mm through a 40 can with some reasonable suppression. I have never tried it because I cannot find a piston threaded for 9mm calibers that fits the evo40. Good luck |

Who makes the best 40S&W suppressor? Or what are some of the best 40 suppressors on the market currently?

I don't know about "the best" but I am extremely happy with my AAC Evo-40 on my G22. So happy that I don't have a need to try any other .40 cal. suppressor. JimC - NRA Life Member since '69 |

probably the EVO-40 from AAC. Though, there's supposedly a Ti-Rant 40 in the future. SWR makes nice stuff too... and the YHM Cobra 2 is loud, but reliable. I wouldn't buy the gemtech blackside in 40 though, if you're looking for anything reliable or quiet. There's also a million other smaller manufacturers that would take too much time to mention. ___________________________________________________________ So the Libyan Fable is told That once an eagle, stricken with a dart, Said, when he saw the fashion of the shaft, "With our own feathers, not by others’ hands, Are we now smitten." -Anton Myrer, "Once an Eagle" |
