Remington Purchases AAC
Written by Tom Beckstrand. Author Archive »

An industry icon’s new venture in suppressor technology.

Remington announced today that they have purchased the assets of Advanced Armament Corporation, an industry leader in suppressor manufacturing. The AAC acquisition appears to be part of Remington’s broader strategic goal of returning American military weapons production to the American industrial base.

For the first time in years, Remington has introduced new products in the sniper rifle space with the Modular Sniper Rifle (MSR) and the carbine/sub-compact weapon space with the Adaptive Combat Rifle (ACR) to compete for emerging US government special operations and conventional force requirements. As it currently stands, the majority of small arms produced for the American military come from companies headquartered overseas.

Remington’s decision to purchase AAC stems from recognition that future military weapons selections will almost unilaterally require sound and/or signature reduction. Our military has been at war for over 8 years now and experience shows that there are significant tactical advantages associated with suppressor use; hence the military’s interest in adopting this new requirement.

The Advanced Armament Corporation is a small business devoted to suppressor, or “silencer,” development and production. AAC is headquartered in Georgia and has recently experienced substantial growth from the military’s interest in and purchase of suppressors including its subcontractor role as the provider of silencers and flash hiders for the SOF Combat Assault Rifle (SCAR) program. Civilian sales are also up as civilians become increasingly aware that suppressor ownership is legal in 34 states.

AAC is one of the largest suppressor manufacturers in the United States. However, few suppressor companies are positioned to provide suppressors in the quantities required by existing and future military contracts while still being able to meet growing civilian demands. The merger of Remington with AAC will enable AAC to take advantage of Remington’s production capabilities as well as benefit from the additional R&D capabilities that Remington has to offer.

While Remington purchased AAC’s assets and intellectual property, initial indications are that they have no intention of replacing AAC’s executive staff with one of their own and that they are instead intent on expanding on AAC’s current footprint.

AAC will report to Remington’s Military Products Division, but the leadership at AAC, including former owner Kevin Brittingham, will remain in place and continue to function as they have in the past.

Remember, Remington (Marlin, H&R, Bushmaster, Cobb, Chrysler) is (are) owned by Cerberus Management. They strictly have the eye on the dollar. If they think they can sell silencers, they want a silencer company.

Its a good thing. They'll get a big cash infusion to buy new machinery and expand production capacity. They need it. They have been plagued with production supply problems for years. This will help fill the pipeline.

Yeah, I was thinking about a new AAC soon, but may hold off to see what direction their taking first.

I would love to be a fly, sitting atop Silent Mike's glasses during a few of their meetings with Remington.

I've always been a big fan of AAC and always believed that you were getting a higher quality product then most with their suppressors. It's just that they were always so much pricier then everyone else.

I would love it if they're pricing were more in line with Gemtech, but with the same quality we're use to.

This is concerning to me as well, but no way to tell whether how Remington's acquisition will affect AAC. Now we know why the ACRs feature AAC suppressors in the publicity photos right?

I'm not so concerned about AAC product quality. I don't think Remington bought AAC so they could make a crappier product.

I am concerned about the politics though. Small companies know they can't afford to give the big "FU" to civilian customers, even us guys who buy onesy-twosy.

Big companies like Remington, and HK OTOH. Remington made the 700P/PSS/LTR "restricted" items even though they're just a standard 700 with a fat barrel. I would really hate to see AAC products become LEO/MIL only due to some Remington retained corporate lawyer trying to justify his six-figure salary.

Our acquisition by Remington Military will have two big effects on our dealings with the civilian/commercial market. By the end of the year, we will be moving into a new facility about 10 miles from our current digs that is 4x the size. We're going to fill most of this space with additional equipment and the talented people needed to run it. This will fix our one greatest shortcoming; our inability to produce enough product to meet demand. The other benefit, and my favorite, is that we will have the time and resources to engage in a lot of R&D. If our products have impressed you thus far, just wait.

Very little is going to change internally at AAC regarding our company culture. Remington acknowledged that our success is due in no small part to the excellent group of people that make up the AAC team. As someone pointed out, the end goal of a company is a profit, and acquiring us and dismantling us would not make very good "cents". The only personnel changes I see coming are going to be the additional staff we need to increase production. Kevin will continue to steer the ship here at AAC. We are not going to forsake the civilian market in any way. If you bought from us before, you'll still be able to buy from us. This goes for other weapons manufacturers to whom we've provided products as well.

I'm more excited now about the future for AAC than ever before. We're now going to have the ability to take the company places I only dreamt of when Kevin and I started making silencers almost 10 years ago out of a back room in a local gunshop. We've come a long way in a decade under our own steam, just imagine what we can do in 10 years with the right resources.

Stay tuned!

My first thought as well. Cerberus owns guns, cars, paper mills, and are all about the dollar.

SilentMike, we thank you for the scoop......

I'm still glad I bought from Yankee Hill Machine. I can call them and talk to a guy in the machine shop.

Chrysler was and is building a product that nobody wants to buy and is staffed with overpaid employees and was burdened down by legacy Union costs that would drive ANY company out of business. They should go out of business. AAC is building a product that they can't build enough of. Major difference.
