Taking a SBR across state lines
I'm going to be shooting at a range on the KS side of the metro tomorrow. I have a MPX SBR id like to take but I don't have time to file the 5320 paperwork with the atf. Its been a while but it seems like I heard one time that I can slip a pistol brace on it to make the trip over. Is this correct?

Nope, still a registered SBR even though it wouldn't look like one!

It it were just a Rifle (not an SBR), you could alter it to remove a prohibited/scary feature and that would be OK, but that's NOT what you're asking....

Also, though it doesn't really apply here, while Pistols can be converted to Rifles, it doesn't work the other way around....Once a Rifle, Always a Rifle!

I'd leave the SBR at home tomorrow, Just sayin' Wink

Correct, if you take it, brace or stock matters not, it's an SBR and you're violating federal law.

It's a dumb rule with SBR's but it's still law.

Unless it was a pistol first. Wink

Don’t happen to have a 16+” upper you could throw on it do you?

I've been in a pinch in the past and called my local ATF guy. He said go for it and submit the paperwork when I get back, or ASAP.

If you leave near a border, submit yearly paperwork for ranges nearby.

Well, I guess that would be an exception....I stand corrected. Wink

I was speaking purely based on the 'As Manufactured' classification of the firearm. Regardless, it's just another dumb regulation, in a LONG List of dumb regulations!

It's still a Registered SBR....Even WITHOUT an upper!

Even if you file the 5320.20, and then claim you hadn't received approval in a timely manner, I wouldn't want to test that in Federal Court!

Put together a braced pistol lower and remove the vertical fore grip if you have one for when you want to cross state lines. Your lower is the SBR, so leave if at home

Not according to this letter from the ATF. Has it since been superseded?
