SBR = Short Barrel Rifle--illegal under ATF rules w/o special $200 tax stamp and chief LEO sign-off/permission--same as full auto requirements--dmd

Ok and if I buy the pistol model and just put the rifle stock is that still illegal?

No, you need to file a Form 1 and pay a $200 tax.
You would be making a "Short Barreled Rifle" Many people are doing it, but you must get the approved form 1 back from the ATF first. It is extremely illegal to do it before ATF approval. |

In the picture above, the rifle laying on top is a GSG-5P like the one for sale with a telescoping stock on it.
The rifle under it is a GSG-5 rifle with the barrel cut down and a Gemtech adapter installed and an M16A1 flash hider. I can help you if you would like info on making an SBR legally. |
