I'm looking at the Fallkniven knives for a hunting / skinning, camping, survival knife. I was considering the Rat-6, but have pretty much ruled it out. I had the BRKT Gameskeeper II...but can't seem to find it anywhere (in my possession). I really liked that knife. Anyway, what say you? Have you used either for the above activities, and how did it work for you? Thoughts? Suggestions?

The A1 would be my recommendation. The S1 is a fine knife, and I suppose would be superior for the purposes of "skinning" as you mention. Other than that, The A1 is the hands-down choice for a hard-working knife.
Get a kydex sheath from Survival Sheath, or from On Scene Tactical, as pictured with my A1.

I'm interested in this as well.

Para, do you have any experience with the zytel sheath from Fallkniven? If so, are they any good, or should I be looking at getting the leather sheath?

Get the leather, then get some custom kydex for your knife. That way, you'll have a choice. I am not at all impressed by the synthetic sheaths being offered by Fallkniven these days.

And it's Spanish Ox hide, to be precise.

Nice collection Para. IMHO, can't go wrong with either A1 or S1. I find S1 more suited to you typical outdoors cutting chores. A1, obviously, will be better at chopping, so if you don't anticipate access to an axe, decide how much cutting convenience you want to give up to acquire some additional chopping capabilities.

Para, what do you think of the Northern Lights series? Better than the A1, worth the extra money?

The Northern Lights series of knives are beautifully crafted. The handles of all Fallkniven products seem short for their blade size, in comparison to American made knives. Since the handles on all the NL Series knives are concave (with one exception), this compounds a slightly unsure feel of the knife in hand. Now, this is subtle, not overt. Don't misunderstand my remarks. This is all relative. In fact, the two largest knives of the NL Series- the Odin (pictured, top right in my photo), and the larger Thor, make superb candidates for one-tool-does-it-all, Mountain Man-type Bowie Knives. Big Grin

The sleeper of the NL Series is the smaller Idun (the smallest of the three leather handled knives in my photo), which has a convex handle that improves the feel of the knife in hand. The blade could be described as a slightly longer, slightly broader F1-type. This little leather handled knife would make a great companion for any outdoorsman.

Having said all that, FK's knives with synthetic handles, like the A1, A2 and F1 are better day-to-day working tools. But whatever you choose, Fallkniven makes no junk.

Dang, para... that pic gets me every time! I especially love that F1 micarta.

To the OP, my vote goes for the A1... Para said it all, so I'll stop here. Big Grin

Fallkniven's new leather sheath for the A1 looks a bit more promising. I can't tell if they're selling their knives with these leather sheaths yet, or if they're only available separately. If anyone picks up a new one with leather, let us know what you get.

I haven't found an A1 standard blade (without the black finish) with the leather sheath. Only comes with the zytel.

Para,

What is the smaller-bladed black-handled knife in the 7 o'clock position?

As long as you're looking at knives in the price range of the A1, take a look at the Bark River Smokejumper. It's about the same size as the A1, but not as thick in the blade and much lighter with, in my opinion, a more comfortable handle. It won't do the prybar thing like the A1, but it's the sharpest out of the box knife I've ever seen and that includes the A1 and S1 (I have all of these knives).
