I currently have a now discontinued Buck Intrepid in my BOB as a survival knife / tactical knife / hunting knife / whatever the hell I need it for in a bug out scenario. It is a good strong knife, but it is awfully big and heavy. I'd like to sell it and replace it with something a bit smaller and lighter but still strong and useful. I really like this knife...

http://www.bayleyknife.com/bear.htm

...but can't afford it. I'd like something with a 4 - 6" blade. I'm not completely opposed to a good tactical folder, but I'd rather have the strength of a fixed blade. One I am considering is a Gerber LMF, but I don't know much about them. I also considered a LanCay M9 Bayonet since it could serve dual purposes. I'd like something with a good, strong, corrosion resistant blade material. I'd prefer to stay at or under the $100 price range since I feel safe that I can get that much out of the Intrepid. What would you guys recommend?

$600 for that fakes name on a knife!! No way!!!

The LMF is a good knife. Buck makes some good fixed blades at a reasonable price.

check out these Fallknivens. Some of the best knives made, and reasonably priced IMO.

I'll second the Seal pup. Good fixed blade knife that falls into the range your looking for. I've had good luck with the SOG brand. I would also consider almost anything from Cold Steel. I carry a Cold Steel voyager daily and beat the heck out of it for work, never have had to sharpen it.

The "Ontario" RAT's are not true Randell's anymore. Check out Jeff Randell's new RC-6's, which will hit retailers this month. Jeff is fighting to get Ontario to stop using the RAT name, since he makes real RAT's with Rowen now. Ontario has QC problems.

I like Busse blades.

The Skinny ASH (about 2/3 the way down the page) is a great all-around knife and cost around $300, plus they have as great a lifetime warranty as one could ask for.

In any case, best of luck.

Gerber LMF II. I got mine from LApolicegear for $60. Great knife for the money. Not something I'd want to carry around on a daily basis, but it's a perfect survival knife IMO.

I did indeed; no need to be snarky about it.

Fallkniven A1. You'll love it. You'll want to have a kydex sheath made for it, as the one that comes with it is not so good.

**edit** Sorry, I, too, missed the under 100 buck line. The Fallkniven F1 is close to that mark, also highly recommended.

The RAT RC-6 is going for around $119.95, not that much over the stated price.

I'll post pics when mine arrives this week Cool

I found a rather long torture test on the A1 on youtube that impressed me enough that I MAY up my budget for that one. Besides, if you shop around, it gets close to my budget.

Also thinking about the S1 just for the weight reduction.

I'm going to sell the Intrepid first... probably on ebay and a lot of it will depend on how much I get for it.

I think I've got it narrowed down to the following...

RAT RC-4
Fallkniven S1
Fallkniven A1

Probably if I had to buy today, I'd get the S1.

Like I said, a lot will depend on how much I get for the Intrepid. My wife goes in for surgery Thursday so I won't have the time to start the auction for a few weeks. I'm just doing my preliminary research right now. Thanks for all the great advice guys. Keep it coming.

+1 on the A1 or S1

VG-10 is an amazing steel. As you saw on the youtube video, it is extremely tough, but it also has great edge retention too - a rare combination. Since it is a "stainless" steel, corrosion resistance is not really an issue either.

Cliff Stamp did a review of Fallkniven's A1 and S1, F1, & WM1

On the RC-4, 1095 will be lower in corrosion resistance since it is a carbon steel - but it only requires minor care. It is a great steel overall, and micarta is an amazing grip.

Something I've been kicking around for awhile is to get one of Fallkniven's A1 blades without a handle and make a micarta grip for it... one of these days I'll get the time... and money

Good luck with the auction.

They don't get much tougher than Cold Steel's Recon Scout for under $100.00.
