Not really.
But it is funny for the virgin-knife carrier--that would be me--I thought--man, I can't WAIT to open those packages at work! But the fact is, a large Sebenza is not meant to slice through bubble wrapped packages , tightly double wrapped with clear wide tape. It cuts through and everything, but the right tool is the very un-sexy and boring box cutter. I was sort of bummed as I cut through the stuff, and the obvious fact hit me--this is not the tool for this job.

So then I wondered--since I am a city guy--what do you REALLY use your Sebenza for? I don't view this knife as a gent folder--I view a William Henry and that ilk as a gent folder. To me, this is a for-use knife, but now my inexperience really shows. What is a large folder MEANT to be used for?

Thanks.

Lunde, that second photo is really 3-D in appearance, gorgeous ! Reminds me of fingerprint whorls.

I use my folder for everything. Funny how people in Princeton or Manhattan recoil when you whip open a nice big spyderco or benchmade.

I have a small Sebenza that travels with me, among other places, to work every day in the pocket of my suit -- and has for years.

I bought it from Mr. Reeve himself at a knife show years ago. It's got some signs of wear by now but it's still sharp (I just run it over a stone or steel every now and again and particularly after cutting cardboard or paper) and solid.

I use it for everything and anything you'd use an everyday knife for -- from opening boxes, cutting stray threads, clipping the ends off cigars to a self-defense implement (if I had to).

Oh yeah. I'm a city guy and IMHO this knife is a great knife for my needs. I expect the large version would function just as well, but be less easy to carry when dressed for business.

I agree. In fact I was thinking last night--why a box cutter is the right tool for bubble wrap and heavy clear tape--it is because the point pops right in, and then cuts through. It's partly a leverage thing--the short blade on the large fat handle, etc--how pressure is applied.

The Sebenza is completely amazing--I wouldn't try to make kindling with a giant ax either--it might be a great ax, but it's not the right tool, exactly.

I'm still wondering if anybody here really uses their large folder for anything 'serious' ??? (honest question)

And finally, as a guy who spent a lot of time collecting chronograph watches--I know no one who uses them to time races or even pasta.

Some cool stuff is just cool--and you enjoy it for how cool it is. The actual purpose of it may not be the reason you like it so much.

That's my 1/4 US cent.

The famous object value. I hear you. I have a little bit of the collector's curse in me. Which is why I have far too many cameras, knives and guns for this small of a living space.

I've been looking at vintage Omega Speedmasters recently and my palms are itching. But then I think "Oh great, another expensive fixation." Smile

I'm trying to resist....

I've never heard it called The Collector's Curse. I like that. I'm a writer too.

I definitely have the CC!!

But I don't see myself buying 50 knives. I think if a box cutter is what is called for in my work--then a box cutter it will be.

I love that Seb. I'll find uses for it.

And I'm going to see if I can use the tip ti pop into bubblewrap, then pull-cut with a downward angle--hey, what if the Seb was all I ever could use? I'd make it work right?

On the other hand, with The CC in mind... a Boker Subclaw is probably my work knife. Uh oh...
