I'm just jetting into knives and saw a SOG Seal Pup Elite that looks and feels great. What do you guys think of that particular item?

Thanks,

Mark

I have the full size SEAL 2000. Good tough knife, fared well in torture tests.

If the pup is similar, just smaller, I would think it is great. Even better utility in the smaller package than the big one.

I have a Seal Pup and it is Ok and gets top reviews from a lot of respected knife review sources. I only paid $50 for mine so in that respect it is a good knife. The Elite model has a minor steel upgrade. The Elite, I think, is AUS8 steel as opposed to AUS6. It also comes in a variety of blade finishes.

For me the small increase in price might be worth it to get a plain straight edge. I prefer a straight edge on my fixed blades without serrations. That is if the design of the knife is something you like. I think the only draw back is the sheath. The blade is pretty loose in the kydex and that groove thing is kind of useless.

It is a pretty tough knife for the price tag. I prefer my Benchmade 151 fixed Griptilian. I only paid $75 for that and it is far superior than the SOG if you ask me.

You know, the Seal Pup may be a good knife, but there are a lot of other great knives: Others mentioned plain edge. For a plain edge in the affordable price range, you could look at KaBar, Ontario Mark 3 Navy, Cold Steel SRK. For more money (and more quality) Fallkniven A1, S1, or F1 series; and Chris Reeves has some good ones.

Others can speak to other knives too; I do think for the price you are getting it the Seal pup would be a good deal.

Go to testknives.com this guy torture tests a bunch of knives (fixed blade), Sog, Ka-bar, Ontario, RAT, and one that did very very well was the Scrapyard. Check it out, you'll see which knives stand up to the abuse. He breaks almost every knife it is just where and when do they break.

The SOG Seal Pup Elite, serrated and TiNi blade came in today. All I can say is WOW. This is going to be a long and very nice relationship. You guys gave me a lot of great websites to look at as well as other options so I'm thinking I may have more cool knives coming at some point.

Thank You,

Mark

SOG Seal Pup Elite, serrated and TiNi blade

Have used one off and on for over a year and it is one tough knife. Useful size and good value if you shop around.

I couldn't find "testknives.com"

I have a seal pup, purchased here at the base exchange. It's okay for what I'd consider a light duty knife. All they had with the seal pups were serrated blades.

It's a relatively thin, light weight blade, and didn't come with much of an edge, out of the box. It came with a molle compatible sheath which has a provision for a stone, but nothing for the serrations, and into which the knife doesn't slide very easily.

The blade has a silly tigerstripe camoflage finish, which probably doesn't make much difference, but looks gimmicky.

I got it because it looked to be the right length to go in my flight vest. It is, but doesn't fit properly.

I'm not overly impressed with the knife. It's okay, but I'm glad it didn't cost more than fifty bucks, because it wouldn't have been worth the price.

It is actually knifetests.com. They don't test the Seal Pup but they do an interesting test of the Seal 2000 knife. The site is fun to check out but in reality I don't see anyone subjecting their knife to this kind of abuse. There is a reason they call them "destruction tests." They do them to see what will destroy your knife.
