A similar incident has occured in Georgia. The local school system has a zero (intelligence) tolerance policy.

the district's Codes of Conduct, students are not allowed to have "a weapon of any kind" on school grounds. Even though a pocket knife is not considered a weapon under New York State penal code, the district also prohibits students from possessing anything "that reasonably can be considered a weapon."

What the hell do the kids write with...chalk and crayons? He shouldn't have had it in his car knowing the school's policies, as much as I disagree with said policies.

From the school's standpoint someone could get into the car, steal the knife and use it against someone else, which could lead to a lawsuit against the school, blah, blah... They could have confiscated it, released it to his parents, and told him not to bring it back. 20 days out of school is a LOT of time missed.

When I was in high school we were told that baseball bats would not be allowed. The baseball team protested heavily and the school board made a ruling that a bat accompanied by a ball and glove was fine, a bat alone was a weapon. Roll Eyes

I guess all they serve for lunch is chicken soup too. Hope you don't want to put anything on your roll or even cut your mystery meat.

I know times have changed since I was in school but come on. I am a LEO and even we wouldn't have had the right to search his car. I am all for making schools a safe place in all but what kind of world are we living in if someone can just accuse you of something and they can just throw your rights out the window. I better go to the emergency roadside kit in my wife's car and take the utility blade out of it.

Mr. Ferguson and I are both children of educators. My concern here is that you have a group of people who obviously don't take that role very seriously. It seems that all these administrators care about is a rigid adherence to the rules of their little world. And rather than teaching an obviously upstanding young man with goals and a bright future that he violated the rule of the law but not the spirit, they are teaching him that when you break a rule that has no oversight, your punishment can be whatever the whim of the ruler wants it to be. Remember all of those people in school who kept to themselves and always looked at the successful people with disdain? I think we know what they are doing now.

Sickening.

When I was a kid we went hunting in the morning before school, left our guns our cars and went back out to kill...animals (pheasant, duck, quail) after school.

Now your gonna get busted for a plastic butter knife in your lunch bag.

We are dying as a country before our very eyes.

His car is a deadly weapon according to the law, depending on how its used. Every person that parks a car in the school parking lot is in violation of the rules. The janitor who has a box cutter to open supplies is in violation. The lunchroom workers are all in violation unless somehow they don't use any knife to prepare a meal. The secretary with a pair of scissors and a letter opener is in violation.

Hell I'm only 31 and many of us had window mounted racks in our trucks with our rifles and shottys proudly displayed on school grounds. No one really thought much of it.

Every once in awhile you'd see a guy with a 12 gauge in the window and you knew his dad trusted him, or he had a job... because most of us just had .410's and .22 rifles up there.

The boy is clearly dangerous, as he is part of a para-military organization: Eagle Scout. (quote: Red Dawn)

Used to be every young man had a pocket knife on him at all times where I grew up.

What are we turning into?
