I snagged a Ranger RD7 tonight that I couldn't pass up from NineSprings. I'm also thinking of another survival chopper. Anyone have experience with the Ontario Knives SP2502 Kukri?
Thanks,
Slugger

You could wait for the RAT RC-10 .

I've got one of these inbound...

But if I didn't find this, I'd have definitely gone for the Ranger. They're pretty sweet.

Looking sweet! I bet that cost a pretty penny.

I have the Ontario RTAK. I love it, but some of those pics above may be better.

I have to highly recommend the Becker BK9!!! I just spent the weekend in State college where a heavy wet snow coupled with the leaves still on the trees devastated the area. I used the BK 9 to chop through several downed limbs to let dry out for fire wood later on. It worked like a dream good heft and the ergonomic handle let me chop for a good couple hours. While like Para said a hatchet would be best the BK9 is a great alternative!!

But if I wanted a kukri type, the Extrema Ratio version is pretty sweet

Good replies and nice looking hackers. The hatchet would be the most sensible next step and the most effective. I'll start gathering info. I've got a smallish camp axe that I've used for years. Any other good performers for hatchets in a lower price range?

Will also keep an eye out for a good Kurki as I've always liked that design. Looks like there is a lot of junk out there though to avoid.

Not too horrible a mark up...$188.50 with a Kydex sheath with Tek-Lok.

I think I got lucky. My brother paid $200 for his without a sheath on the secondary market.

I'll post up when it arrives.

Ontario no longer produces their Kukri, but Ka- Bar still has a Taiwanese import which is reportedly of very high quality. I just don't care for the mediocre looking leather/Cordura sheath, which I've seen with their Taiwanese made Bowies. A better carry rig would make a huge difference.

Cold Steel made some Khukuris with wooden grips in the traditional pattern years ago. The grip was sized for western size hand and I found it fit mine rather well. If you find one buy it. Becker made a Khukuri too.
Becker knives are very well built and worth the money. I would suggest handling one first to see what fits your hand better.
