Here's an old woods pal that's been with me on many an adventure.

I was driving along one of my roads on the ranch and came upon a blowdown and reached for the old knife to clear it.

There's a lesson in bucking timber there, too.

I made this parang back in 2002 from an old wide McCullogh chainsaw bar. It's chisel ground for a Southpaw {me}. It's on it's third handle now, one I put on it not too long ago. Walnut with a thin veneer insert to allow weightforward balance.

I have used it on many a trail and to butcher livestock and game. I killed a coyote with it years ago.

It's a keeper.

Trail blocked:

Knocking out chips:

Clear through:

Carry ready with retention thong added to all parangs since my wife picked one up and it slipped from the scabbard and opened her leg like a book. Many stitches later...

I NEVER use a lanyard on a parang or bolo as if I fall I do not want to be tied to a 13-inch razor blade for the tumble down the mountain.:

Laid out for view;

Handle and tang detail:

Very thick, stout scabbard:

Yes.

I do all my own leatherwork. Scabbards, holsters, saddle rigging, rifle scabbards, etc.

That's impressive, the chisel grind, especially.
Most folks don't know about right and left hand grinds.

What do you use to stitch your leather goods? And what do you use to cut the blade shape out of the metal stock? I have read with interest your other posts on knife making, but it's been awhile.

I use a nylon thread. Holes are drilled. Then hand stitched.

The rough blade shape is cut out with an angle grinder using a cutoff wheel or they are cut out of the base material when red hot {when soft} with a cheap hatchet and hammer.

That's impressive. Beautiful handlewood too.

I have one of those Chainmate hand chainsaws in my car. Only had to use it a few times. It's a lot of work.
