Hey Guys,

So I am in the market for a really well-built knife. A while back a friend let me use his Benchmade 551 Griptillian. I looked at BM website and was unable to find the knife.

Does anyone know if the 551 Griptillian with Axis lock is discontinued?

Also, I was told that some of the BM are made in the USA and some are made overseas. Which ones are USA made?

Thanks Nick

Griptilian 551

I doubt Benchmade would ever discontinue it.

Benchmade at one time had only Blue box knives, then came Black box with its autos and special runs. After that, they introduced Gold Box and Red Box knives. Red Box knives as far as I'm aware are all made overseas. These are the knives you see in blister packs or in red boxes. They are cheaper in material, quality and price.

Gold box knives are the crazy $500+ knives in general.

All Blue, Black and Gold box knives are made in the USA. All Reds are made overseas so far as I'm aware.

And yeah, I doubt they ever discontinue the Griptilian. I suspect it will be like Spyderco's Delica.

They would never discontinue the Grip or Mini Grip. They have won awards with those models and have far too many configs for them. I know the full size is solid but I prefer the Mini 556. I boought mine from Cabelas with D2 blade and it is a sweet little beater knife. Cost me $75. Think about it. If they discontinued the models they have so many different specialty models (Cabelas, NRA). They even have one with pink handles to donate money towards breast cancer research.

It is true that Benchmade does make some imports but I would never say they are substandard in any way. All their imports will be in the Red class but there are some USA made blades in the Red class as well. The Grips are all Blue class which is probably the best all around models from them. I own 2 Black class from Benchmade that are solid as well. For a little more money than the Grip 551 you can get the Presidio which is probably one of the most solid blades they offer. I would look at the newer Presidio Ultra. The original that I own has aluminum scales and marks up real easy.

I will also agree that benchmade will never stop producing the grip's and they are a work horse of a blade... If I had to pick my favorite benchmade it would be the 710, I own one with a D2 blade, D2 is harder to sharpen but will hold a edge longer than alot of steels.. The Grip is a good benchmade to start out with..
