Mitt Romney condemned the conduct of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and the president’s former lawyer Michael Cohen after they were found guilty of multiple federal crimes Tuesday.

“The events of the last 24 hours confirm that conduct by highly-placed individuals was both dishonorable and illegal,” Romney tweeted Wednesday without naming Manafort or Cohen explicitly.

Romney said it also confirmed his faith in the U.S. justice system, “and my conviction that we are a nation committed to the rule of law.”

Cohen pleaded guilty to eight criminal counts, including tax fraud, false statements to a bank and campaign finance violations. While appearing in court, Cohen implicated President Trump by saying he was directed by “a candidate” to pay hush money in the weeks before Election Day to two women alleging they had affairs with Trump.

At virtually the same time, a jury found Manafort guilty of eight charges, including tax fraud, filing false income tax returns, and failure to file reports of foreign bank and financial accounts in 2012.

On Wednesday, Trump questioned the fates of his former associates, who now face years in prison.

The Justice Department “took a 12 year old tax case, among other things, applied tremendous pressure on him and, unlike Michael Cohen, he refused to 'break' - make up stories in order to get a ‘deal,’” Trump said of Manafort.

Of Cohen, he said: “Michael Cohen plead guilty to two counts of campaign finance violations that are not a crime.”

If that were truly the case, we'd also be seeing convictions for numerous Hillary Clinton staffers for crimes far more egregious than tax fraud. Hmmm, I wonder why those aren't forthcoming.

Ultimately STFU Mitt. Your opinions and commentary are no longer desired or appreciated.

I bet Romney is counting on (or at least hoping) Trump will crash and burning before 2020, and not being in a position to run for reeelection, and he's trying to position himself to pick up the nomination if that happens.

You're probably right. And, for the record, I really have no right to cast stones as "we" elected (and will likely re-elect) Jon Tester. One of the biggest (literally and figuratively) pieces of shit to ever grace the floor of the Senate.

Trump is likely going to have a primary challenge in 2020. It might be Romney. It might be Flake <if I'm thinking of the right guy>. But he's not going to get a walk to the nomination.

The Republican establishment never wanted Trump. They got stuck with him, and they're holding their nose and dealing with him. But if they get half a chance to dispose of him, they will in a heartbeat. Romney knows this (possibly more than anyone), and is positioning himself to use it.

The GOP seems to have an abiding faith in the principle that failed Presidential candidates make extremely bad Presidential candidates. I can see Pushing Turtle and his ilk jollying Mittens along, but he'll never get another shot at the big chair. At least not as a Republican.

Yeah, and the Republican voters will kick their asses again, like they did previously. These swamp creatures will never learn that we despise them.

Mittens will never be President, because Magic Underwear is too weird for too many, and too many Christians who are die-hard Republican voters think poorly of Mormonism.

Bank on it. It was a huge deal for a Catholic to get elected, FFS, and Catholicism is yuge. Mormonism carries too much of a culty stigma to too many; right, wrong, or otherwise.

Plus he sucks, in general.

Fuck that shit. I voted for Mitt. He lost the second debate after winning the first one handily.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." To say he 'lost' the second debate supposes that he even put forth an effort (which he did not).

The entire reason Trump won the nomination was because of Mittens. During the general election, there were numerous times when OZero was leading with his chin. But Mittens wouldn't even launch the knockout shot. People wanted Trump because they were tired of someone pulling punches. In Trump, the voters saw exactly what was sorely lacking in Mittens. And that is what we got. It is what is needed now.
