When we paid off Dad's mortgage, we sent in the noted balance, then went into the message system and directed them to take any additional daily interest from the escrow, then refund the excess.

We got the refund check about 3 weeks later. I'd recommend using this process.

If you really want to get them, over pay by a penny or two.

They have already said that they would refund any overpayment, so can you ballpark the county fee for me? Yeah, I know that it depends on where I am, but would it be closer to five bucks? Fifty? Just a WAG will do.

Congratulations!!! That must be a very good feeling. We still have 27 years to go. Big Grin

I have a question. Do houses have a "Title" that the bank will mail you once you pay off your house? (Like cars)?

In California the bank can’t collect more than 50$ to reconvey the lien. I’d assume it’s comparable in your locale.

When I was at Mount Vernon the guide showed us the bannister pole and a shell button sent into it. Seems when the mortgage was paid off, the paper was burned and the ashes placed into the bannister.

No.

You acquired title by delivery, and recording, of a deed, sometimes a Grant Deed or Warranty Deed depending on the state and custom, the bank secured its loan by recording a mortgage or deed of trust which encumbered your title. When the loan is repaid, either when you sell or refi, or eventually pay it off, a release or reconveyance will be prepared and should be recorded in the county office that recorded your deed and the mortgage, which clears your title of that lien or encumbrance.

Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

When you had the votes, we did things your way. Now, we have the votes and you will be doing things our way. This lesson in political reality from Lyndon B. Johnson

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown

I have paid off several vehicles and it is such a great feeling. I can only imagine what it will be like to pay off a home. So far I have moved before paying a home off, but my next home should be my last one. Congratulations on paying off your home!

Better Idea.

Overpay by $5

After they give you the deed, the bank will have to keep the account open until they give you your $5 back. Don't accept it. This will keep the account open for years and it will show up on your credit report and have your credit score higher so you can get a better loan/reference than you would otherwise.

I wish I would have thought of this when I paid off my house, but I was only 32 and didn't think that far ahead.

Congrats! I’m only 28 years behind you!

I’ve been considering ways to throw an extra grand at it each month and make it a ~15 year deal.

Congratulations, you'll now have plenty of extra money every month that went to the mortgage payment to put away or play with.

In that case, bagpipers and be sure to yell "FREEDOM!" at the top of your lungs as you hand over the check. Bonus if the bagpipers put glitter in their bags.
