I won't bother re-posting pictures, but you really should see them.

And he claims the batteries were Surefire brand.

I guess flashlights either are not or soon will not be allowable on airplanes.

I wonder is Surefire is now re-packaging cheap imported batteries ?

Lithium laptop batteries are worse.

Most of the list of prohibited items is just security theater anyway with no real impact other than inconvenience and the demonstrate they're doing something.

Expect the airlines to fight a battery ban tooth and nail due to the effect it'd have on business travel.

A while back, our kitchen sink drain started to leak at night. Wife and brother-in-law get under the sink to survey. I hand them my Surefire G2 Nitrolon. They tell me to go to the local big box store for parts. Upon my return, the bulb, cover, and front case are lying in pieces. They are not happy. Turns out they did not have the good sense to use the momentary switch. Wife turned on light, and left it on. About 20 minutes later,BOOM! Of course,I didn't brief them on the correct operation of the unit. It happens.

I'm guessing that would have been less than enjoyable if it was not jettisoned from his belt.

Good grief. I guess that is the only thing that will destroy a Surefire. Glad it didn't blow up on his belt.

Did he get the batteries from George Tsai?

Oh no, of course not, he never shipped them.

Could the company name "Surefire" be any more appropriate? Wink

Uh HOLY SHIT!

I've heard about exploding Surefires and other CR123A based flashlights before. They're usually with some cheap ass chinese made batteries (batterystation and ammondotech).

Damn, seeing these were Surefire batteries this will be interesting to watch.

As such, these are reasons why I don't carry CR123a battery flashlights on my person. My EDC flashlight is a Fenix LD10 with a Alkaline battery. If I do have my Fenix TA20 (2xCR123A) or Surefire E2L (2xCR123a) then it's in my Glovebox only for when I suspect I'll need it.

This ain't the first time flashlights have exploded but none have been this violent as seen by the OP.

HOLY SHIT. Eek

I use CR-123 batteries in my flashlight, and one of those batteries looks more like a empty cartridge than a battery.

Good job on documenting it and capturing/preserving the details.

Very fortunate he was able to get it away from his side.

Wonder if he bought a lotto ticket?

We went through a ton of CR-123's in Iraq. We had to tape them up with ESD tape a specific way before throwing them in the hazwaste site. Lithiums are known to go boom.
