She says Mexico Beach was erased. Toucan's Grill and any structure that wasn't brick construction pretty much disintegrated in the wind.

Here a link to video from a helicopter of Mexico Beach, outside of a few homes, everything is gone...

I wonder how the deer in St. Andrews State Park faired?

We took our first RV camping trip there 3 years ago. Walking down a path, my youngest son said there were deer ahead, given the location, I didn't believe him, but sure enough they were there.

Damage is incredible. Looks like a 20-40 mile wide tornado went through, which isn't far from the truth.

Amazing more folks aren't injured or dead.

My ex-wife got the beach house in Mexico Beach in our divorce.

100% chance she didn't have it insured and it is gone. It was on 15th avenue over by Toucan's.

My niece was in Mexico Beach evacuating their charter boat and lost it and the truck.

Glad to her you are all OK. I was grateful to hear from 45cal this AM. Sorry to hear your niece lost their charter boat and their truck. I hope they have insurance and are able to get back to normal as soon as possible.

The amount of damage and devastation in this video is unreal. It's really hard to grasp or believe how hard that area was hit. Prayers go out to all of the families that had properties there.

I did find it amazing that a few newish hotels looked pretty much unscatched.

I just saw a video of the destruction at Tyndall AFB. Fortunately they got the planes and people out of there Monday. It will take years to rebuild. It is reminiscent of what Homestead AFB looked like after Andrew.

The western side of NC is getting roughed up pretty good. Anyone hear from Jeff Yarchin?

So no pictures of my brother SIGmonkey rowing to safety on a raft made out of unopened cases of beer?

I was one of a large support crew that went south into the devastation Andrew left behind. When we reached Cutler Ridge, we had to be escorted further south by a couple local police departments because all geographical landmarks had been wiped away. Mexico Beach looks very bad, but thank god, its appears to be a notch or two behind the devastation Andrew inflicted on South Florida.

A lot of destruction...

I'm sure this is a factor of just flying up the beach but the majority of those structures looks like they were probably vacation rentals. Is that true? It has been forever since I visited that part of Florida.

I'm curious what it looks like a little further inland

There are locals down there (obviously) but lots of those beachfront places are rental properties or second beach homes.

Unfortunately people forget that these things (hurricanes, earthquakes, floods, etc) WILL happen in due time. You may be lucky and not have it happen while you live some place but even though the media is saying “something this powerful never hit the Florida Panhandle”, they forget to add “in recorded history”. We (European / African descendants) have only been in North America for a little over 500 years. I guarantee hurricanes have come and gone all over this continent, its just that nobody wrote down when they happened until ‘recently’.

I hope everyone down there is ok. This thing came up so fast. Florence was so slow and it destroyed the ENC, but then this was so fast and it did the same thing.

Nature is a force. Best wishes to everyone down there.
