I'm pretty fluent around cars, but I went to change the oil in our new Challenger, I was at a loss. Couldn't find the filter.

Put it back down, went home and had to watch a Youtube video, first car I have ever seen, that you change the filter through a space by the top engine cover!

Also thought I was a dumbass when I couldn't find the battery right away---hidden in the trunk!

This is my way too.

Me three. I pay Triple A $150 a year. I have it for the towing which I have used infrequently over the years but it's just good peace of mind for me.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

My car was disabled. Fuel pump. I was a member of AAA so I called them. Dispatcher checked location, and also location of service shop where I wanted the car towed. It was further than the five mile "free" tow, so she quoted the excess at $23.90.

I told her to send the truck. When we got to the service shop the driver wanted $40.00 before he would unload the disabled vehicle. I asked what had happened to the $23.90; he went into "broken record" mode, repeating his demand for $40.00.

AAA membership renewal rolled time rolled around. I checked with my vehicle insurer (Travelers) and found that I could add roadside assistance and towing to all three vehicles on the family policy, for less than AAA membership. Towing for AAA was 5 miles; with Travelers it is 15 miles for the older Volvo that does not have collision / comprehensive insurance, and 100 miles for the newer vehicles that do have collision / comprehensive.

And of course, there is the political agenda that AAA supports with member dues. AAA can go eat a moldy turd.

But agree that most younger types are clueless about cars because their parents couldn't be bothered to teach them. Or the kid had no interest in learning.

Not always the kid's fault. I've met plenty of parents that didn't know jack about their cars. Can't teach what they don't know.

Serious thread drift: What agenda?

Several years ago my daughter dated a young man. They had a flat a few blocks from my house. I went down to assist. The boy was sobbing, and had no clue. I talked him thru the change and got him going. I later gave him a Mag-Light, the one tool he didn't have that would have helped. A week after the incident my daughter dumped him. I asked her why, she replied that he was crying over a flat freakin' tire, what good was he going to be when something really bad happened?

This is the reason I carry a 20 ton bottle jack and a piece of 2x12 in my truck, along with a good four way lug wrench. If I'm going to have to change a tire, I'm damn well going to have decent tools to do it with.

Here's to the sunny slopes of long ago.
