It took a lot of damage to the capital city before he tapped out. His approval rating dropped down to 26%.

Many here have been critical of the French. I give them credit for the solidarity they displayed. Left, right, liberal, conservative all fought the tax hike. I can’t imagine this happening over here. We’re too divided to reign in government.

Yes, that's essentially it... or carpool.

The big question is: why do people vote for socialism and then complain about it?

The answer is that the politicians always tell them that someone else is going to pay for it; that they will get something for nothing, that all they have to do is vote for the socialists.

Of course, it never works out that way. The middle class is always destroyed.

France weathered its worst riots in more than a decade Saturday as “yellow jacket” protesters continue turning parts of Paris upside down over concerns related to high gas taxes and the high cost of living.

French riot police closed popular tourist areas and fired tear gas as they tried to quell the chaos in the streets. At least 110 people were injured while protesters associated with the grassroots-driven demonstrations clashed with authorities and vandalized the Arc de Triomphe.

Much of the anguish stems from citizens’ disdain for French President Emmanuel Macron’s high gas taxes and overall war on fossil fuels. The beleaguered president denounced the violence in a statement crafted during the G-20 summit in Argentina.

″(Violence) has nothing to do with the peaceful expression of a legitimate anger” and “no cause justifies” attacks on police, Macron said Saturday night in Buenos Aires. The violence contrasted with protests from elsewhere in the country where “yellow jacket” demonstrators peacefully protested and erected road blockades.

Paris police said at least 110 people, including 20 police officers, were injured in the violent protests, which originated Saturday morning near the Arc de Triomphe and continued into the night.

Protesters meanwhile continue to air their grievances. “It’s difficult to reach the end of the month. People work and pay a lot of taxes and we are fed up,” Rabah Mendez, a protester who came from the French suburbs to protest in Paris, told The Associated Press.

“Our purchasing power is severely diminishing every day. And then: taxes, taxes and taxes,” Paris resident Hedwige Lebrun told reporters. “The state is asking us to tighten our belts, but they, on the contrary, live totally above all standards with our money.”

Macron enacted sky-high gas taxes to tackle what he believes could doom humanity within the next decade: global warming. But many French citizens see them as an example of the French president’s inability to understand the plight of the country’s working class.

The price of gas rose in January by 7.6 cents per liter in France and the price of diesel by 3.84 cents. To put that into perspective, 3.8 liters of fuel is equivalent to about 1 gallon of gasoline in the U.S. Europe is on the warpath against gas-powered vehicles. Denmark’s government presented a plan in October to ding all such vehicles by 2035. The plan is to curb vehicle pollution and combat climate change. Macron, for his part, issued a freeze on any new oil and gas leases in 2017 and intends to ban all oil and gas drilling by 2040.

They call themselves the "Gilets Jaunes," or yellow vests, in French. They're mostly young, male and extremely angry, and they've been marching in the streets and rioting in Paris and elsewhere, protesting yet another bunch of taxes on gasoline in the government's never-ending battle against global warming. Who says no one cares about climate change?

"A protest against rising taxes and the high cost of living turned into a riot in the French capital, as activists wearing yellow jackets torched cars, smashed windows, looted stores and tagged the Arc de Triomphe with multi-colored graffiti," the AP reported of Saturday's riots.

governments must understand they can't just jam things down people's throats, and expect them to like it. No one asked Macron to raise energy taxes. Macron and his government did it because, to them, globalism is more important than satisfying the demands of their own citizens. It's that simple.

Today, among all OECD nations, France has the second-highest rates of taxation. Only Denmark ranks higher. So people are fed up.

Nor is it just a "French thing." Macron is among a growing number of European leftist leaders who want to foist the anti-climate change agenda on their citizens as part of this new globalism. But this isn't kumbaya, feel-good globalism; it's one that will feature few if any individual rights, lots of taxes, shrinking standards of living, no real freedom, and little joy.

Across the border in Germany, soon-to-be-former German Chancellor Angela Merkel recently said that, on behalf of climate change and migration, " Countries must give up their sovereignty ... in an orderly fashion of course."

Macron and Merkel are the two strongest leaders in the EU. Their goal, stated outright, is to use the threat of global warming and unbridled migration to wrest control of their nations from their own people — whom they demonize as "populists" — and give it instead to the European Union.

The EU's record of economic incompetence, absurd regulation, excessive taxation, preening corruption and, increasingly, totalitarian behavior, are troubling to say the least.

The U.N. has now declared criticism of its pro-immigration policies "hate speech."

Should we care?

Yes, because leftists here have the same things in mind for all of us. The scientific holes in the climate change religion are enormous. Literally thousands of engineers, scientists, academics and Nobel Prize winners have criticized the flawed science behind the theory that we inevitably face disastrous over-heating of the planet.

Yet, some in Congress — including some Republicans — are eager to saddle Americans with a massive new "carbon tax."

Our just-released IBD/TIPP Poll shows what Americans think about all this. Just 17% ranked climate change as No. 1 or No. 2 on their list of priorities for the new Congress. Even so, some in Congress seek literally trillions of dollars in new taxes that will distort energy markets and hand rebates to those who don't even pay the taxes .

If no one likes the idea, why would Congress push it so hard? It's called "redistribution,"

That's why they always exempt themselves and continue to jet around the world burning far more carbon than you or I will in a lifetime.
Leftists want to control you. They want a two-tiered world where they rule, and the rest of us are serfs.

Freedom is a very valuable thing. It must be guarded vigilantly; it must never be surrendered.

It must be fought for, protected, handed on for them to do the same. This is an urgent reminder, indeed, because now, going beyond our bilateral ties, beyond our very special relationship, Europe and the United States must face together the global challenges of the century."

Macron borrowed the line from Reagan, who first made it famous in a speech to the Phoenix Chamber of Commerce in 1961.

It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children's children what it was once like in the United States where men were free."

It's interesting that not only did he misattribute the quote to Theodore Roosevelt but he then tacked this on:

... by which it has now become clear that he meant the opposite of what Reagan meant by freedom. By "face together the global challenges" he clearly means global control, the end of national sovereignty, and limiting individual freedom.

Isn’t that what comes up during our 2nd Amendment discussions? Was it George Washington who talked about overthrowing the government every so often to keep them in check? The left figured this out years ago. Unfortunately, the right can’t demonstrate because we’re too busy with families, jobs, paying bills, etc and the consequences of getting arrested.

They're just hoping this is enough to quiet people down, so they can hike the taxes without protest in the spring.

Fuel tax rises which have led to weeks of violent protests in France have now been postponed for six months.

The move was announced in a televised address by PM Edouard Philippe, who said anyone would have "to be deaf or blind" not to hear or see the anger.

Almost three weeks after the first day of national mobilization of the "Yellow Jackets," and three days after the serious violence in Paris and the country, the Premier Minister announced the new measures Tuesday, via television, in an "attempt to mollify" and to return to "social peace." "If the events of the last days have shown us anything, it is that the French do not want increases in tariffs or new taxes," stated the head of government, hoping to "(hold to) the ambition" of the pivot to environmentalism...

To reduce the anger of the "Yellow Jackets," the Prime Minister had also issued a mea culpa in the name of the [ruling] majority. "The French who put on a yellow jacket lover their country. They want taxes lowered and their work to pay. This is also what we want. It is the heart of the mission of the president of the Republic. If I have not adequately expressed it, if the majority had had trouble convincing the French, then let me say, we must do change something," Edouard Phillpe said.

But many of the Yellow Jackets are unconvinced.

After the annoucement of Edouard Phillipe, the "spokesmen" of the movement didn't hide their dissatisfaction. "This [suspension of the tax] plays the French for fools and puts the tax in place in six months," said Benjamin Cauchy, member of the group "Free Yellow Jackets." This moratorium on the raising of the tax on gas, announced this morning, has already been criticized by several politicians, who judge it insufficient. "This is obviously does not meet our expectations or concerns," said Marine Le Pen.

Another protester was encouraged for the moment, but promised further demonstrations if the government attempts to re-levy the tax. Protesters lifted their blockage of the petroleum depot at Brest (they've been blocking such installations to starve the country of gas, judging the moratorium "satisfactory, but added, "We're going away" but said the government must "know well that if we don't get what we want, we're coming back. They know what we're capable of."

I think this is a big deal. They are onto something.
If the 'elites' in Paris won't listen to the people who want freedom from their 'progressive' policies and high taxes, the people will come from the country and burn Paris.

I wonder if that idea will catch on?

Gin up a protest or get in quick on a growing crisis and push what the symbol of the protest is going to be. Buy a lot of them cheap. Mark up and sell.

And it was a stroke of genius to use that as they symbol of the resistance - because everyone has to have one, so they can't bushwack you and say "OH, you MUST be a PROTESTOR since you have this YELLOW JACKET in your car!!!", unlike things like Guy Fawkes masks, etc, etc.

French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday announced that he was abandoning a proposed fuel-tax hike amid fears of more unrest after weeks of nationwide protests that have already cost several lives and millions of euros in damages.

The Élysée presidential palace confirmed the president’s decision in an emailed document sent to FRANCE 24.

The government had previously announced it would suspend the tax increase for a period of six months, but was forced to backpedal further as the country faced a new round of "yellow vest" protests this weekend.

“The government is ready for dialogue and has proven so, because the proposed tax increase has been dropped from the 2019 budget bill,” Prime Minister Édouard Philippe told lawmakers late Wednesday.

While Philippe made it clear that the measure would not be in the current budget bill, he did not say whether it would be included in a later 2019 budget update.

Paris on Saturday was subject to the worst rioting in decades, with more than 130 people injured and 412 arrests. Shops lining Paris’s famed Champs-Élysées Avenue were looted and several cars were torched.

The Arc de Triomphe, which is home to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and was visited by world leaders last month to mark the centenary of the end of World War I, was also sprayed with graffiti and vandalised.

The protests have left four people dead and have seriously damaged Macron’s approval ratings, which a new Ifop poll released Tuesday showed had dropped to 23 percent.
