Foxnews.com: Coronavirus declared public health emergency in US

Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar announced on Friday that the coronavirus has been declared a public health emergency in the U.S. Beginning at 5 p.m. on Feb. 2, U.S. citizens returning from Hubei province will be subject to a 14-day quarantine, while other Americans who traveled elsewhere in China will be instructed to self-monitor for possible symptoms.

Azar also said that President Trump is temporarily suspending entry into the U.S. for foreign nationals who pose a risk of transmitting the virus.

In the same press conference, the Department of Homeland Security announced that starting on Sunday, flights coming to the U.S. from China will be funneled through seven airports that are equipped to screen passengers for symptoms of the virus.

The move comes as Delta Air Lines and American Airlines suspended flights between the U.S. and China, following several other international airlines who made similar announcements. United Airlines said that it was suspending flights to Beijing, Shanghai and Chengdu, but would continue flying to Hong Kong.

Officials continued to stress that the overall risk to the American public remains low, but that the measures being taken are to help "focus efforts as we are dealing with unknowns."

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health, said that one of the unknowns is the recent development out of Germany that the virus can be transmitted from an infected person who is asymptomatic.

The announcement comes just hours after the CDC announced that the 195 passengers who arrived in California on a flight from China on Wednesday were being kept under a 14-day quarantine as they are continually monitored for symptoms.

As of Friday, there had been more than 9,600 confirmed cases of the coronavirus with over 200 deaths. Officials confirmed that the number of confirmed cases in the U.S. remains at six, with the latest being an Illinois man whose wife was diagnosed with the virus after traveling to Wuhan, which is considered the epicenter of the outbreak.

Couple this with the discovery this virus has HIV-like amino acid sequences that suggests that they converge to constitute the receptor binding site.

I'm curious what end game this little monster seeks, is it kill us with the flu or kill us with HIV?

Interesting.

The article does of course not prove that the virus could become as persistent and difficult to treat as HIV, but it’s a reminder to the knowledgeable of how viruses mutate and arise, and especially how it’s impossible to immediately predict with certainty what effects they will have. Just because we get over them quickly with apparently nothing more than the sniffles and we can joke and laugh at people who suffer serious consequences—including dying—doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the end of things for us.

It was reported just recently that measles—that “innocuous” disease we don’t need to risk being vaccinated for—can seriously weaken one’s immune system, including against diseases we previously acquired immunity for. Ebola and dengue are a couple of others that have been implicated in having long term adverse effects on people who “recovered” from the diseases.

US$1 million bail set for Harvard professor Charles Lieber, who was charged with hiding China ties

https://www.scmp.com/news/worl...rd-professor-charles

Chemistry department chair is accused of lying about his participation in China’s Thousand Talents Plan, which targets overseas scientists and researchers
He allegedly agreed to do research, write articles and apply for patents on behalf of Chinese school for US$50,000 per month and US$150,000 in living expenses

A Harvard University professor charged with lying about his role in a Chinese talent recruitment programme must post a US$1 million cash bond, a judge ruled Thursday.
Charles Lieber appeared in Boston’s federal court wearing orange jail garb and chains around his ankles two days after his arrest at his Ivy League university office, where he was chair of the chemistry and chemical biology department.

Lieber is accused of lying about his participation in China’s Thousand Talents Plan, which targets overseas scientists and researchers willing to bring their expertise to China in exchange for things like research funding and lab space.

Prosecutors had proposed setting bond at US$1.5 million secured by Lieber’s suburban Boston home. But Magistrate Judge Marianne Bowler instead ordered Lieber to post a US$1 million cash bond by next Thursday.

The FBI has released a wanted poster for Ye Yanqing, who is believed to be in China. Image: FBI

Lieber is required to give up his passport and disclose any foreign bank accounts and barred from talking to any potential victims or witnesses in the case, among other things. His wife will also hand over her passport after prosecutors raised concerns that she could move cash to another country.

Prosecutors say Lieber agreed to conduct research, publish articles and apply for patents on behalf of China’s Wuhan University of Technology in exchange for US$50,000 per month and about US$150,000 in living expenses. He also received $1.5 million to establish a research lab at the Chinese university, authorities said.

Authorities say Lieber hid his involvement in the programme from Harvard and told federal investigators in 2018 that he had never been asked to participate in the programme.

Harvard officials said Tuesday that Lieber has been placed on administrative leave and that the school is “conducting its own review of the alleged misconduct”.

Lieber’s arrest highlights the federal government’s growing concern over China’s efforts to steal US research and technology.

Chinese recruitment programmes such as the Thousand Talents Plan have been exploited by scientists who have downloaded sensitive research files before returning to China, filed patents based on US research, lied on grant applications and failed to disclose money they had received from Chinese institutions, according to a congressional report issued last fall.

Federal prosecutors in Boston also announced charges this week against a researcher at Boston University, who is accused of concealing her ties to the Chinese military.

Ye Yanqing, who prosecutors say is a lieutenant in the People’s Liberation Army, lied about her military service to get in the US and researched US military projects and gathered information on two US scientists for the Chinese military, authorities allege.

The FBI on Thursday released a wanted poster for Ye, who is believed to be in China.

Now at 250 reported deaths and over 12,000 reported cases. I expect these numbers will rise rapidly as those not yet exhibiting symptoms start popping up. My expectation is that the situation in China is far worse than is being truthfully admitted.

The Latest:
Man taken off American Airlines flight for wearing gas mask.

A man has been removed from a flight in the US for refusing to take off a gas mask after passengers began to panic, Texas media report.

The man was wearing the mask on an American Airlines flight bound for Houston from Dallas on Thursday.

Attendants asked him to remove the mask after passengers started complaining, but he refused. The flight was delayed by almost an hour.

The man was rebooked on the next flight and boarded without the mask.

@AmericanAir , Just FYI flight 2212 to Houston was delayed an hour because you let this guy on the plane wearing a gas mask. This then panicked people on the plane and we had to wait for him to be escorted off.

"I looked up and saw a guy coming onto the plane wearing a full gas mask, which was kind of odd," passenger Joseph Say told Houston ABC station KTRK.

"Immediately, people start talking in the back of the plane," he said.

"You couldn't see his face. You couldn't identify any features on him. People were worried he had sneaked something on board and that he had the mask for his own safety."

Mr Say said he initially thought the gas mask was related to the new coronavirus, which has killed 259 people in China.

"But then I noticed it didn't have the filter, so that didn't really make sense," he added.

"What we heard from the lady sitting next to him was he said he wanted to make a statement. I don't know what the statement was," Mr Say said.

Uncanny similarity of unique inserts in the 2019-nCoV spike protein to HIV-1 gp120 and Gag

The question is... was that HIV "inserted" as a bio-weapon?

Coronavirus Contains "HIV Insertions", Stoking Fears Over Artificially Created Bioweapon

Over the past few days, the mainstream press has vigorously pushed back against a theory about the origins of the coronavirus that has now infected as many as 70,000+ people in Wuhan alone (depending on whom you believe). The theory is that China obtained the coronavirus via a Canadian research program, and started molding it into a bioweapon at the Institute of Virology in Wuhan. Politifact pointed the finger at Zero Hedge, in particular, though the story was widely shared across independent-leaning media.

The theory is that the virus, which was developed by infectious disease experts may have originated in the Wuhan-based lab of Dr. Peng Zhou, China's preeminent researcher of bat immune systems, specifically in how their immune systems adapt to the presence of viruses like coronavirus and other destructive viruses. Somehow, the virus escaped from the lab, and the Hunan fish market where the virus supposedly originated is merely a ruse.

Now, a respected epidemiologist who recently caught flack for claiming in a twitter threat that the virus appeared to be much more contagious than initially believed is pointing out irregularities in the virus's genome that suggests it might have been genetically engineered for the purposes of a weapon, and not just any weapon but the deadliest one of all.

In "Uncanny similarity of unique inserts in the 2019-nCoV spike protein to HIV-1 gp120 and Gag", Indian researchers are baffled by segments of the virus's RNA that have no relation to other coronaviruses like SARS, and instead appear to be closer to HIV. The virus even responds to treatment by HIV medications.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

Second Chinese City Bars Residents From Leaving Their Homes, Apple Closes All Offices & Stores In China

https://www.zerohedge.com/geop...-workers-demand-city

Since our last update Friday evening, the situation on the ground in China has reportedly gone from bad to worse. The true extent of Beijing's 'quarantine' has been exposed - and not just the ridiculously oppressive tactics exercised on sick people simply out trying to buy food so they don't starve, but the even more bizarre notion that the WHO has decided to try and validate Beijing's response when all evidence suggests that public relations is and always will be Beijing's No. 1 concern.

By most recent count, total cases have eclipsed 12,000, while confirmed deaths inside China have hit 259. More than 100,000 people are still under observation, as we reported last night. The 46 new deaths announced last night (Saturday morning in China) was the largest daily death toll (that was the total from Friday) since the start of the crisis.

To that end, a report reportedly signed by hundreds of doctors blaming the Communist Party's leadership for waiting a month to inform the Chinese public and the international community that the virus could spread from human-to-human contact. The leadership was apparently aware of this fact as early as mid-December, yet they actively concealed it until the situation started getting out of hand and cases were being confirmed in neighboring countries.

China's finance ministry has finally announced that it's going to lift import taxes on American-made medical products needed to help combat the outbreak (it's interesting how it took them nearly - checks notes - two months since the start of the outbreak to lift the trade-war tariffs).

ABC News is the latest American media outlet to collect footage from Wuhan via drone. The haunting footage clearly shows the scope of the lockdown. An entire city as big as New York, with almost nobody outside or in the streets.

We got some interesting corporate news overnight: Apple announced early Saturday that it would close all of its stores and offices in China at least through Feb. 9. Already, the factories of many of its suppliers (like Foxconn) have been impacted by holiday "extensions" that will keep them closed through at least early Feb.

As of midday on Saturday, at least 19 provinces, municipalities and regions have told businesses not to resume work before Feb. 10 at the earliest, according to CNBC, which also noted that Disney, Tesla several US airlines and myriad other American business have suspended operations in China. Hubei, the center of the outbreak, has reportedly extended its Lunar New Year holiday until Feb. 13.

On Saturday, Huanggang, a city of 6 million people near Wuhan, has banned residents from leaving their homes in an effort to stop the coronavirus. The ban states that 1 person per family can leave every other day to buy basic needs.

It's the first city to declare a lockdown on par with Wuhan's total ban of people leaving their homes. Meanwhile Huanggang's mayor warned on Saturday that a "significant" increase in the number of confirmed cases on Saturday or Sunday.

Here's a video of a doctor from Huanggang saying the media won't dare report the true infection totals from Huanggang, adding that it's almost as bad as Wuhan.

I cant post his video here because he shared it on facebook.

A friend in China, uploaded a few short videos from yesterday. The place is a ghost town. Mandatory masks and you have to get your temperature checked to ride public transportation.

He did tweet one from last night from the subway but not the one where they checked his temperature. here is one of the mostly empty streets.

I did a screencap of the subway video, so no sound.

If true, this is the worst possible news. The best practice with bioweapons is to have a cure at the source in the event of an outbreak. If the Chinese are panicking like this and it is human engineered it's bad news because they do not.

More study needs done on things like communicability, life span outside the host, and mortality. Unfortunately, the Chinese cannot be trusted in any case, so we're reduced to treating sick people in the west and determining treatment survival rates.
