For anyone who cares about the details, this is from the “Nature Briefing” feature of the science journal Nature.

SARS-CoV-2 is the name of the virus previously called 2019-nCoV; COVID-19 is the name for the disease it causes.” [Emphasis added.]

SARS-CoV-2/Covid-19 will illustrate like China's economic, political and military behaviour has not, despite the fact they should have done, just how bad an idea it has been to rely so heavily on China for manufactured goods.

Looks like the quarantine is not working since new cases are still popping up. A carrier/medium seems to be spreading it still. Hopefully, it hasn't mutated to become airborne yet, or did it?

Health experts warn Congress coronavirus may hit US hard in next two to four weeks

https://www.washingtonexaminer...xt-two-to-four-weeks

Leading health officials expect to see a significant uptick in coronavirus cases nationwide.

“We're going to start to see those outbreaks emerge sometime in the next two to four weeks,” said Scott Gottlieb, former Food and Drug Administration commissioner. “We should be leaning in very aggressively to try to broaden diagnostic screening right now, particularly in communities where there is a lot of immigration where these efforts could emerge to identify them early enough that they'll be small enough that we can intervene to prevent — prevent more epidemic spread in this country.”

Gottlieb, one of five panelists who briefed the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee on Wednesday, said although U.S. customs officials blocked some travel and are screening travelers returning from the Chinese city of Wuhan, where the virus is believed to have originated, they could not have stopped every person with coronavirus from getting into the United States.

“I don't think we should be planning for the onesie-twosie cases that we've been seeing thus far in the United States,” said Asha George, executive director of the Bipartisan Commission on Biodefense. “We have to plan for the possibility that we have thousands of cases, you know.”

Hundreds of thousands of coronavirus cases could break out globally, George said, adding federal, state, and local governments should start planning for an outbreak on a massive scale.

“We're going to see a lot more cases here, and I really worry about the helpers in the parasite patients,” said Luciana Borio, former director of medical and biodefense preparedness at the National Security Council.

Julie Gerberding, a former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said the U.S. would begin to see more cases among people who did not visit China but were exposed to the virus by people who returned from China either before the travel ban or who were not flagged in health screenings upon their return.

China starts to tell the truth?

China Reports Huge Jump In New Coronavirus Infections, Deaths; Oil, Stocks Tumble, Gold Soars

All those clueless hacks who warned us for years not to trust China's economic data yet were so gullible to believe any coronavirus pandemic "data" released by Beijing are going to look pretty damn silly right about now.

Hubei just released its latest round of coronavirus outbreak figures, and in a clear confirmation of the 'conspiracy theory' that China had altered the way it was reporting Covid-19 deaths and cases - clearly in order to suggest that things were improving and you should go back to work, while ideally buying stocks, the province at the epicenter of the Coronavirus pandemic just came clean and the numbers are stunning.

The number of cases exploded by 14,840, resulting in a total of 48,206 cases, including 13,332 clinically diagnose cases:

So what happened?

Recall that on Monday we published "This Is How China Is Rigging The Number Of Coronavirus Infections" in which we explained that China on Feb 7 moved the goalposts by changing the definition of the term "infection" and that "going forward patients who tested positive for the virus but have no symptoms will no longer be regarded as confirmed."

Well, it appears that a few days later, China changed its mind and has reverted to the original definition of "infection" while also including "clinical diagonisis" to determine if a new infection had take place. This is how Hubei explained the change:.

With the deepening of understanding of new coronavirus pneumonia and the accumulation of experience in diagnosis and treatment, in view of the characteristics of the epidemic in Hubei Province, the General Office of the National Health and Health Commission and the Office of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine issued the "Diagnosis and Treatment Plan for New Coronavirus Infected Pneumonia (Trial (Version) "adds" clinical diagnosis "to the case diagnosis classification in Hubei Province, so that patients can receive standardized treatment according to confirmed cases as early as possible to further improve the success rate of treatment.

According to the plan, Hubei Province has recently conducted investigations on suspected cases and revised the diagnosis results, and newly diagnosed patients were diagnosed according to the new diagnosis classification. In order to be consistent with the classification of case diagnosis issued by other provinces across the country, starting today, Hubei Province will include the number of clinically diagnosed cases into the number of confirmed cases for publication.

Of course, the real reason for the original change as noted above was to give the impression that China was succeeding in containing the infection, which helped boost stocks - both in China and globally - sharply higher, and in the case of the S&P, to new all time highs.

As for the catastrophic revision, it may also explain why on Tuesday morning, China's CCTV reported that Hubei province removed its two top health officials, namely health commission head Liu Yingzi and party chief Zhang Jin from their posts. Almost as if, in retrospect, they were caught hiding something...

And while China can now claim it wants to be more transparent (which is odd for a nation that is still refusing to admit the US CDC on the ground) and wants a more comprehensive definition of "infection" because it is suddenly so concerned about all those people it ordered to go back to work on Monday (with new cases now emerging in people's workplaces forcing an immediate quarantine of all workers and co-workers), it somehow also changed the definition of "death", because at the same time as the explosion in new cases, which clearly indicates that the pandemic is now clearly out of control, the number of reported deaths in Hubei alone spiked by 242 to 1,310 (we are still waiting for the official number of deaths across all of China which will likely add quite a few more cases to the Hubei total).

Much to China’s chagrin, fudging the numbers won’t be possible forever. And the longer they wait, the more disingenuous they will look when real, solid numbers can no longer be avoided. Right now, not admitting the true extent of the epidemic doesn’t serve any real purpose that I can discern other than financial. Or that they really are hiding something involving nefarious behavior.

Not allowed to go home... Are they expected to keep working, while under quarantine?
If they are all quarantined together, because one CoVid2019 case was found, aren't they putting at risk all 200+ employees?

Many factories in China operate like college campuses where there is dormitory-type housing; food and basic medical care is also provided by the company. Workers go home on the weekends or, depending on the type of work and season, work a 6-day work week and return home monthly or, when the season tapers-off.

Coronavirus Patients May Not Show Symptoms for Over 3 Weeks, Study Says

https://www.theepochtimes.com/...dy-says_3233985.html

The incubation period for the new coronavirus, can be as long as 24 days, according to the largest-study yet analyzing patients of the disease.

The Feb. 9 study, which has yet to be peer-reviewed, was led by renowned Chinese respiratory doctor Zhong Nanshan and written in collaboration between 37 Chinese researchers. It analyzed around 1,100 patients across 31 provinces and 552 hospitals, and found that the median incubation period is 3 days, lower than a previous estimate of 5.2 days.

The maximum incubation period is 24 days—up from previous projections of two weeks—the study found.

The researchers also could not exclude the possibility of super-spreaders—a sick individual who can infect a large number of others.
Rapid Human-to-Human Transmission

The study also found further evidence of human-to-human transmission: around 160 people—26 percent of non-Wuhan residents—did not travel to Wuhan recently prior to contracting the virus, nor did they have any contact with Wuhan locals.

“The 2019-nCoV epidemic spreads rapidly by human-to-human transmission,” it concluded.

Additionally, only around 1.2 percent of all patients had direct exposure to wildlife. Chinese authorities had previously linked the coronavirus outbreak to the wholesale live animal and seafood market in the suburbs of Wuhan, the epicenter of the viral disease.

According to a recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the number of viral infections doubled every 7.4 days during the outbreak’s early stages.

Zhong previously referred to early February as the peak of the outbreak, although he has since revised this position, saying the peak period could arrive in the coming days.

In a Feb. 8 interview with the Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, Zhong struck a positive note but said it would be “too early” to determine the inflection point based on the current discharge rate and the number of new cases, noting “different standards for discharging patients.”

The researchers also raised concerns about possible transmission through fecal contamination. Scientists first raised alarms around such a prospect upon detecting traces of coronavirus in the fecal matter of the first infection person in the United States.
Risks in Sewage

The study cited a recent lab experiment, where researchers found that four out of 62 stool samples tested positive to the virus. A separate experiment identified four more patients whose gastrointestinal tract, saliva, or urine specimens tested positive to the coronavirus.

Sean Lin, a U.S.-based microbiology expert and former virology researcher for the U.S. Army, said the finding raised a major health concern, especially for those who are under self-isolation at home.

“When you flush the toilet, things may enter into the building’s sewer system, and if [there’s] any … contamination with a local water source, then it could be problematic,” he told The Epoch Times. Swirling water in the toilet bowl could also cause virus particles to enter the air and create harmful aerosols, which is one reason one should keep the toilet lid down when flushing, he added.

From a different perspective, the detection of virus traces in patients’ gastrointestinal tracts could suggest the virus to be well adapted to other human organs in addition to the lungs and the respiratory tracts. The reported cases of diarrhea, according to Lin, likely indicate a high concentration of the virus in the gut.

During the Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak, Amoy Gardens, a Hong Kong housing complex in the Kowloon area, saw 321 falling ill as of April 2003, and authorities believed the contamination of the sewer system and human-to-human transmission were both partly to blame for the mass infections.

Hong Kong officials evacuated around 100 people from a high-rise residential building on Feb. 10 after two residents on separate floors contracted the coronavirus. The apartments share the same drainage system. The health department staff have collected feces samples for testing.
Other Transmission Routes

The virus can also be transferred through contact, known as fomite transmission—for instance, when an individual touches tainted objects before touching one’s eyes, nose, or mouth, or other membranous areas, which are more vulnerable to viral attacks.

On Feb. 8, Shanghai health officials confirmed that the deadly virus can spread through aerosols—meaning that one can get sick by inhaling the virus particles in the air.

On the same day, the U.K. government classified the coronavirus as an “airborne high consequence infectious disease,” referring to diseases that can spread through respiratory droplets or aerosol transmission.

Additionally, the study found that only less than half of the patients exhibited signs of fever at the onset of the illness, although a majority of them (around 88 percent) developed fever following hospitalization.

Throw in that China is now using different criteria to diagnose and boom! The number of infected rises 15,000 in Hubei province alone. Which means it will rise everywhere the infection is currently present.

Wow,they have not tested all the people yet. "The ship, which is still carrying more than 3,500 passengers and crew-members, has 218 people infected with the virus out of 713 people tested since the ship returned to the Yokohama Port on February 3."

Japan refuses to release Israelis on coronavirus ship
Israel’s foreign minister appears to defend decision; Japanese authorities say another 44 on board have been infected with deadly virus

near Tokyo, February 12, 2020. (Yuta Omori/Kyodo News via AP)

Japan has refused to allow Israeli passengers to leave a cruise ship quarantined off its coast after over two hundred passengers were found to be infected with the deadly coronavirus.

Foreign Minister Israel Katz on Thursday expressed understanding of Tokyo’s position.

“Japan’s desire to ensure the prevention of [the spread of] infection is shared by Israel,” Katz told Army Radio in an interview.

Katz added that even after the ongoing quarantine ends, it is not clear whether Japanese health authorities will permit Israelis to immediately return to their home country.

“No one is guaranteeing that after the isolation period ends the Israelis on the ship will be able to return home,” he said.

It is believed there are 15 Israelis on board the Diamond Princess. The passengers have taken to Israeli media in recent days to plead with the government to secure their release from the liner.

The ship is expected to stay in quarantine at least until February 19 — 14 days after the isolation period began.

Katz comments came after Japan’s Deputy Ambassador to Israel Kazuhiko Nakamura told Army Radio the Israelis would not be allowed off the vessel for the time being.

“Release of the Israelis on the ship will be done only after the quarantine period ends,” Nakamura said.

Japan will take the Israeli request into consideration, he said, but a final decision will be made by the Japanese health authorities.

Later Thursday, Katz held a situations assessment at the ministry that was also attended by Health Minister Yaakov Litzman. Regional representatives from Israel’s embassy in China tuned in via video link and gave updates on the situation in the country.

Litzman announced that he was sending sending Deputy Director of the Health Ministry Itamar Grotto to Japan to assist the Israelis still on the ship.

“The goal is to take a closer look at the health of Israelis on the ship, and ensure that they can safely and quickly come home while maintaining public health in Israel,” Litzman said.

The development came as Japan’s health ministry said 44 more people on the ship tested positive for the virus that causes the new disease, known as COVID-19.

The ship, which is still carrying more than 3,500 passengers and crew-members, has 218 people infected with the virus out of 713 people tested since the ship returned to the Yokohama Port on February 3.

In all, Japan has 247 confirmed cases of the new disease that apparently started in Wuhan, a city in central China, in December.

Health Minister Katsunobu Kato told reporters that five of the patients sent to hospitals earlier have severe symptoms, are on artificial respirators or under intensive care.

Kato also said the government has decided to allow passengers older than 80 to get off the ship if they wish to do so after testing negative for the virus. He said results of tests on about 200 eligible passengers are underway, and those with chronic health problems or in cabins without operable windows will be given priority.

Kato said the measure is to reduce health risks of passengers stuck in rooms under difficult conditions. Those who are released will be asked to stay at a designated facility through the end of the quarantine period.

“We are doing our utmost for the health of crew members and passengers who remain on the ship,” Kato told a news conference.

On Wednesday, Israel’s foreign ministry asked Japanese authorities to let the Israelis off the ship and to weigh “other quarantine possibilities.”

“The Israeli embassy in Japan is taking care to ensure that the Israeli citizens are receiving… regular supply of medicine and kosher food,” the ministry said in a statement.

The Foreign Ministry said at the time it was also working to obtain a letter from Japanese authorities allowing the Israelis on board to fly back to Israel when the quarantine period ends.

Litzman held video chats on Wednesday with the Israelis on the ship and gave them a phone number for his assistant at the Health Ministry, Walla news reported.

The Diamond Princess has been in quarantine since arriving off the Japanese coast and the virus was detected in a former passenger who got off the ship last month in Hong Kong.

When the boat arrived off Japan, authorities initially tested nearly 300 people of the 3,711 aboard for the virus, gradually evacuating dozens who were infected to local medical facilities.

In recent days, testing has expanded to those with new symptoms or who had close contact with other infected passengers or crew.

Those who remain on the ship have been asked to stay inside their cabins and allowed only briefly onto open decks. They have been asked to wear masks and keep a distance from each other when outside, and given thermometers to regularly monitor their temperatures.

The virus has since spread to more than two dozen countries. The epidemic has killed more than 1,300 people in China and dozens of others in East Asia.

Many countries have implemented travel restrictions on recent visitors to China, which has more than 99% of the world’s reported infections.

U.S. Supports Aid to North Korea for Fighting the Coronavirus

I have mixed feelings about this. Stopping spread of the virus should be a priority, and if there is a country that could foster an explosion of the coronavirus it is North Korea. But there is a long history of the elite in North Korea misusing any relief aid we send that is meant for the people. The border with China is extremely porous and its impossible that the virus has been kept at bay. Until Lil Kim gives complete transparency on not only his nuclear weapons program but how aid is distributed, I’m tempted to say limit aid to beefing up border security with the South Koreans. The secrecy around infection numbers in NK would make China look like an easy to read children’s book.

On Feb 12th a Senate Committee held a hearing on the new coronavirus. Four very knowledgeable doctors were there and they shared a ton of information and insight. It is 2 hours long and the only one to try and turn it into a political circus was Kamala Harris. The hearing starts at the 18:30 mark. It is amazing how many of our prescription drugs comes from China (most drugs that are generic)and we may see some big disruptions in supplies.

And it's not just with prescription drugs (although that's a potentially life-threatening issue, so it's a bigger deal). A huge amount of supplies for various industries come from China, and the supply chain is starting to falter.

I have a friend who works as an interior designer, and she was telling me last night that their industry is suffering due to a lack of Chinese textiles, since many of the factories are either shut down or are running on minimal staff.

I think people are starting to realize that this coronavirus will cause HUGE economic consequences even if the loss of life isn't as devastating as some fear.

White House manufacturing policy advisor Peter Navarro has an important discussion with Maria Bartiromo about the consequences of the Coronavirus which includes the need for U.S. companies to return manufacturing to the United States on key medical products and pharmaceuticals. A very important subject.
