With IP address 10.x.x.x is there a VPN involved somewhere?

Can any of the computers get to the internet?

Are the shared folder on the win7 or the 2000 computer?

both computers can get on the net but for some reason they wont send files between themselves unless the net is turned off on the seven. I think I'm just going to try a cross over cable and get a Ethernet to usb adapter and go that route.

If the two computers are not in a domain, would they not have to be members of the same WorkGroup in order to share files?

Sounds like the folders have not been shared.
Also when the username/password box comes up you MUST use the {computername}\{username} nomenclature and the password for that computer.
Example: username: xltcomputer\administrator password: whateveritis
Since your able to ping each box then there is network capability.
Additionally: 1) you need to create a share 2) the "profile" not set to public > prefer work profile.
Sometimes the "browsing" in network neighborhood does not always come up fast but you can access in file explore by using: \\{computername}\{sharename}
Example: \\xltcomputer\data
Start with that.
TCP/IP troubleshooting can get novices in trouble FAST so good luck.

No > the workgroup membership makes no difference.

When you transferred files before (using 192.168.1.1) what exactly did you do.

It should be sufficient to do the same thing but change the address to 10.0.0.46 (or 47)depending which one you are on.

You have to share the folder on the computer you want to "pull" from.

Lot easier than using a crossover cable every time you need a file.

I should be tall and rich too; That ain't gonna happen either

Well, since it works. Eek
A convoluted way to go about it but results are what matter.
