Eleanor Roosevelt supposedly said

"The Marines I have seen around the world have the cleanest bodies, the filthiest minds, the highest morale, and the lowest morals of any group of animals I have ever seen. Thank God for the United States Marine Corps!”

"We are a nation that has a government - not the other way around. And this makes us special among the nations of the earth. Our government has no power except that granted to it by the people"

"Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few."

"You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life."

"All the great things are simple, and many can be expressed in a single word: freedom, justice, honor, duty, mercy, hope."

"We shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender."

"Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning."

And my favorite:
"Sometimes doing your best is not good enough. Sometimes you must do what is required."

All by Winston Churchill, of course. I could go on, but these are the quotes that choke me up when I think of them.

--------------------------
Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.
-- H L Mencken

I always prefer reality when I can figure out what it is.

In the same address, Ford cautioned the nation against great expectations: "I'm a Ford, not a Lincoln."

I guessed Patton because of: the date of the quote; the audacious tone of the quote; and because I knew he played a role in dealing with the concentration camps.

I was ignorant regarding his anti-semitism. No offense intended.
