I wonder if part of the appeal is that the nest somehow better protects the young from predators than a small, plain nest.

Think of what must be "true" of a lowly puffer fish
1. Radial or polar coordinates in his head
2. A retained center (reference)
3. A diameter measurement for the OD
4. A diameter measurement for the ID (differentiation)
5. A circle based on a center
6. Relative height of sand mounds based on energy input from fins
7. Awareness of where he is in "altitude" (see how he uses the center under fin near the tail to define his position with respect to the ground
8. Understanding of dead shells (vs. live)
9. Triangulation with wide-set eyes to grab the shell
10. Force feedback to avoid crushing or breaking the shell in his mouth
11. Color and pattern vision
12. Sense of cleanliness
13. A purpose
14. A dedication (24 x 7)
15. Deferred gratitude (often thought solely human)
16. Where to put the art with respect to depth, sunlight, and current
17. How do defend himself while constructing
18. Selflessness (he fertilizes eggs alone, after they are laid, and remains on guard for days)

Interestingly similar to Japanese culture.

Beautiful work.

Am i right that, unfortunately, this is the fish that is a sushi delicacy?

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.
