MENSA said I passed, but I just dont know |
Even at 18, the removable models will take a lot of commitment. My kids had issues with the retainers after they had their braces off. Very easy to loose or easy to let the dog get them.
My wife is using the invisilines and she likes them. She does only use them now at night. It did not seem to bother her very much at first. Good luck. Remember what ever you choose will have to be what your son really wants and will use. If he does not use them, it will be money wasted. |

Since I've spent a bit of time in the dentist's waiting room lately I've seen all the videos...
Invisiline seem to be a good system. They take a mold of the teeth and make a series of braces that gently move the teeth. The upside is that unlike metal braces, you can take them off to brush your teeth. |

Invisalign does not work for all types of bite problems. An orthodontist can help you decide which type is best.

If I had to sumamrize I'd say Invisalign is almost impossible to see but doesn't move the teeth as well. Metal braces can be seen (although ceramic mounts up top can mimize this), but they are the all time champ of actually moving teeth.
I've got metal braces on right now. I have ceramic up top so you can't see them very easily. My orthodontist told me that roughly 2/3's of the people he's done inisalign with end up needing regular braces at the end...so he quit doing them. I saw a buddy of mine about a month after I got my braces and he pulled his invisalign bracket out and told me he has braces too...they were completely undetectable during normal conversation...on the flip side he said they hadn't moved his teeth very much and that his dentist gave him another few months for free and he may have to get regular braces. These metal braces have a pretty quick impact...the flip side of these is the cleaning...eating can be a pain in the neck right at first but it becomes liveable. |

They didn't even have the invisible ones when I had braces. Or at least they were very new and very expensive.
I can tell you the metal ones work, and if your son isn't the most responsible kid, he may not use the invisline's to their advantage. I know I sure as hell wasn't responsible at 18. Anyway, the metal ones do hurt after each months 're-torque' but they'll work faster and there's no risk that they wont work at all. Plus you get those cool little rubberbands to fling all over the house. |

depending on the level of correction, invisilign works for moderate conditions, clear working for light and medium, metal working for all types.
invisilign is the most expensive. johnsodl is right about commitment. if he is forgetful, metal it is. |

I really think the determining factor is the severity of your son's bite problem. Invisalign can't be used effectively for all cases, (like rotating canines or intruding molars). It's all case dependent. see ur dentist or orthodontist.

that doesn't seem like too steep a price...i paid about $4200, 10 years ago.
my orthro has a payment plan when they divide the total by the number of months you'll be wearing the braces...no interest |

I had Invisiline, and it worked excellent. Nobody even notices that you are wearing them, and you can still eat whatever you want, and you can still brush your teeth properly. It's well worth the extra money, IMO. But like the others said, you will have to consult with the orthodontist to see if his problem can be corrected with Invisiline. And it does take some discipline, so if he is forgetful, or might take them out because they hurt, it won't be a good choice for him. Every time you change to a new set, it hurts for a few days, just like getting the metal braces tightened.

the metal braces correct faster
the downside is that cleaning with them takes more work |

I forgot to add that at my orthodontist, if the Invisiline didn't fix your teeth to your satisfaction, they would put on metal braces at no cost. It was about a grand extra for Invisiline.

I had 4 kids in braces at the same time! It took me three years to pay them off. |

I have 3 sets left of the Invisaligns, and it has gone perfect for me.
I started out with a horrible, horrible gap in the front, top and bottom. I have/had 31 sets of braces, at 2 weeks each, except the last 3 will be for 3 weeks each. Then I will have a wire on top behind my teeth and I will have to wear a retainer at night. $5,900 But it was the best $5,900 I have ever spent in my life. I am lucky to have our region's Invisalign instructor as my Ortho. He really knows his stuff. Talk to your ortho and ask what he thinks is best. ______________________________________________________________________ "A handgun is not there to strap on when you think it might be needed. I had the ceramic (clear) braces on my upper jaw and the more traditional stainless steel braces on my lower jaw for about 30 months when I was 16-18 years old. I don't think I would have been mature enough to wear the Invisiline retainers, so I'm glad the braces were epoxied to my teeth!

I paid $6K for mine, got them off earlier this year. It was $400 extra for the white ceramic, so I just went old school silver.

I just finished with my Invisalign a couple months ago.
Overall, I was very happy with the process. They are really hard to see. One of my best friends, also using Invisalign at the time, didn't notice I had gotten them. Also, they encourage good dental behavior, which was to my benefit. No cavities since I got them. I believe metal ones tend to increase cavities, like they did for my brother. Downside? They do take longer. Also, you need good discipline to wear the things and to keep up with the brushing and flossing. Keep that in mind if your son is still in school, I had to brush in the bathrooms at school many times. |
