Trump lost Virginia to Hillary Clinton in 2016, 44.4% to 49.8%. And, in the 2019 state elections, Democrats took control of Richmond.

But in threatening gun control, said Van Cleave, Democrats “woke a sleeping giant” that should help the GOP this year.

I agree, this will help Trump and the GOP this year.

But... the Virginia House of Delegates is not up for election in 2020. So it will change nothing at the State level.

Why does Virginia vote for its House of Delegates in odd years (2019, 2021)??
It seems to me that they would have better turn out in even years when people vote for national offices.

After a chaotic morning at the state capitol in Richmond, and despite huge turnout from thousands of gun owners, Virginia Democrats approved a number of gun control bills in a key committee hearing Monday.

The Senate Judiciary Committee meeting was supposed to begin at 8 a.m., but was delayed more than an hour thanks to the long lines to get in the doors of the capitol. New rules banning the lawful carrying of firearms in the capitol and office buildings led to new security measures, which in turn led to lengthy delays and annoyed staffers and citizens. Meanwhile, some Democrat staffers were apparently able to bypass the required security.

After folks cleared the long security line, they were then told that Democrats were requiring an equal number of supporters and opponents of the gun bills to be seated in the committee room , despite the fact that those opposed to the bills far outnumbered gun control supporters.

New rules put in place by committee majority. A lot of pro gun people who had waited in line since 7:00am were not happy to have people in "Mom's Demand" t-shirts escorted in ahead of them.

Once the hearing got underway, Sen. Judiciary chair John Edwards (no relation) was asked by Republican state senator Mark Obenshain why a number of gun bills were going to be voted on, given that Edwards had told GOP members that the gun bills wouldn’t be heard this morning due to the absence of GOP state senator Bill Stanley.

This is the second lie in as many days for Virginia’s Democrat lawmakers. On Friday, House Speaker Eileen Filler-Corn and other Democrats claimed that newly enacted ban on firearms in the capitol was done at the request of the Capitol Police. Not so, according to Col. Anthony Pike, who told the press that Democrats came to his office asking how best to implement a ban.

The next stop for all of these bills is the floor of the state Senate, and I’d expect Senate Majority Leader Dick Saslaw to call for votes as soon as he can. Virginia Democrats are obviously hoping to ram through as much of their anti-gun agenda as they can before Lobby Day brings tens of thousands of gun owners to the capitol on January 20th.

You've got to give the Dems credit for doing what they said they would do. Republicans get elected and then pussy-foot around, wasting time. Democrats get elected and charge forward.

We all know Democrats haven't introduced anything that would TRULY address mass shootings...for example, mental health measures...[the state of affairs in mental health treatment in Virginia is abysmal]

Instead, what those pansy Democrats are doing is sticking it DIRECTLY to the conservatives by stuffing anti-gun measures down our throats...and it's working nicely for them. They've called our bluff. We're not 'peaceful' citizens capable of great harm when needed, we are instead 'harmless' subjects of Democrat-party rule, not really capable of or willing to do any harm whatsoever.

Our bluff has been called and we are now exposed as harmless, spineless, nutless wonders. All that we've ever tried to project as strong, capable citizens willing to defend our rights is but one big monumental joke. We're nothing of that sort - it's but fantasy and these new laws prove it. The Dems have won...because we're afraid of being arrested, losing our jobs, and family, etc. - not willing to sacrifice anything at all. Our ancestors (some of them recently alive) gave/sacrificed all for WWII and those type of people were citizens. Not us, we're mere subjects of Democrat-party rule.

I'm disheartened, but remember this is just the first dance moving these bills out of committee to the floor. After some lively debate, possibly some defections or at least a few "Present" votes. Then we work to do what they do; appeal to the courts, up to SCOTUS. I think a few pages back I mentioned the need as SteadyHand does, the state needs to put out the resources to help with mental health emergencies, suicide prevention, rehabilitation to prevent tragedies.

We have a show not far away this weekend, I plan to go and put a check in VCDL's donation jar and maybe buy something to support an LGS.

Two thoughts:

To no one's surprise, every bill but one was passed along party lines. Two sound bytes were aired on local radio, one opposed to gun control and the other in support. The lackwit who stupidly put on the air for all posterity said, "80% of the people" supported anti-gun legislation.

So what? 80% of the people could support infanticide (like Northam) but that wouldn't make it right. The U. S. Constitution wasn't written to appeal to emotion, it was written to preserve RIGHTS.

Second, I'd like to post a quote I stole from another board. The sentiment and experience expressed mirror mine 100%. Also from a fellow Virginian:
quote:
In my youth I was a liberal. Though not like the kind we see today, I did know some pretty extreme left types during my formative years in the 60's (I was born in early 1946). I knew these people, hung out with them, traveled with them, and associated with them and I can tell you flat out a number of things about them.

They don't like America. They don't like what she stands for. They don't like her history, her culture, her heritage, her customs, and her traditions. And they look upon people like us as barely able to stand on two legs. As knuckle dragging, mouth breathing, single-digit IQ miscreants who are too dumb to come in out of the rain. They really do. They hate us and believe we are just one ladder step up from Neanderthals.. and maybe on the same rung with them.

They patronize and placate us just to get our votes and our support, but in reality, they cannot stand to be around us. This is fact, not an opinion. And this is one of the primary reasons why I escaped that political side and found refuge and peace where I am today. My journey from them to where I am now began in 1968 and ended in 1972 and I am so glad I made the switch. Those people are NOT people of solid character, integrity, honor, dignity, and moral fiber. Trust me on this.

You can't truly call yourself "peaceful" unless you are capable of great violence. If you're not capable of great violence, you're not peaceful, you're harmless.

Listen, I understand the frustration but it's a bit early to declare defeat. There's a process that has to happen and it's going to take a little time. Like it or not, the majority of our side needs to see this go to court. They don't seem to grasp that they're asking the government (courts) to give them relief from the government. They need to go through the process and figure it out for themselves and we have to wait until they do.

As for the courts, I said this before: the only way they'll rule against themselves is if they're afraid of the consequences. My only concern is that they're effective in dragging this out long enough to wait out our anger and motivation.

SteadyHand - New laws haven't even been passed and you are throwing in the towel? Really? If there is something to be disheartened about, it's your attitude.

All conflict is a series of gains and losses. In the end you have to gain more than you lose, but to expect it all to roll your way with minimal effort is folly. And I say minimal effort not to discount what has been done by the pro-gunners in VA, but considering it's only been a couple of months means that the fight has just started. The left has been grinding at this plan for YEARS.

So buckle up and realize that the fight is constant and that there are likely many more dark days ahead than light.

It's clear we have millions of good citizens willing to fight for our rights. We have good, honorable institutions that will do the same. But unless we have a political party that has more to offer than high-school jabs at those who are the enemies of decency and liberty, we have no hope for turning things around.

I want to illustrate for you are the sheer ass-hattery, the sheer cluster-fuckery, that is the Virginia Republican Party. When Attorney General Mark Herring celebrates the brazen assaults on our liberties, there is no thoughtful response from the Virginia Republican Party. No recognition that the people and organizations are fighting in the absence of a Republican party that seems to even care. There is no vision. No facts. Nothing. Just stupid, meaningless, juvenile retorts than will persuade exactly no one.

From the Virginia GOP's twitter page from today.

It's time the Va GOP be taken over by adults. It's like some kiddie's twitter page.

Today was a solid day for many reasons.

First SB16 was tossed. yes We have HB 961 to worry about, but I am getting plenty of feedback that it will be fought aggressively.

Second, we showed up, in much greater numbers than were expected for the slapped together NRA rally.

Third, by bringing in the MDA clowns in a preferential way, the organizers looked like fools.

Fourth, we have news reports of dem delegates and senators questioning some and all of the legislation.
https://www.wsls.com/news/poli...Elbhfhr8Zs3m1cL0TEbM

Fifth, We will be there next Monday also. In Far greater numbers. With the whole nation looking on.

Sixth, We have dozens of new candidates for running for seats across the state. People who were never engaged in Virginia politics are coming out, participating and actively stumping for new candidates.

Seventh, Wether they admit it in person or to the public. The left realizes they fucked up. 91 counties. 127ish out of 135 towns, cities, counties in Virginia have passed ordinances and declarations. BOS meetings that have never had more than 40 people present have had 200,500,1000,1500,2000, and 3000 people show up. The left could only get 25 MDA members there on their lobby day, and 25 there today. There is no groundswell to change and they know it.

Eighth, Some dems who wrote laws are considering compromises or flat out listening to constituents. One who wanted all semi auto's, NFA items, gone is willing to listen to constituents about NFA items. He had no clue at the extra scrutiny the owners go through. IE this response from Del Marsden
quote:
"Eric, I tend to agree that suppressors have legitimate uses and will be interested to hear the debate should this reach the Senate floor. Give me a call if you'd like to discuss: (phone# redacted). Best Regards, Dave Marsden".

^^Taking a deep breath here; I appreciate the work you put into keeping us at home in the loop on what was going on in the front line. The images of the Lt. Gov working the attendance lines and seeing youth, young men and women, seniors, and hopefully folks from all walks of life as the faces of good citizens, were actually encouraging.
I believe part of it is too many of the folks pushing this live in echo chambers of high rolling donors, etc. repeating the same lines. May they all see and hear us in this effort.
