I work in the restaurant business and as such, I deal with the public every shift. While most people are friendly, you have your share of people who are downright rude. However, an even smaller percentage of my guests truly engage me in conversations and form a bond with me. Today, I was reminded of that fact when I received a card in the mail today from a lovely older couple that I've been serving since 2012. Since then, they have given me a card for every Christmas and every birthday, treating me as if I were their own son. In fact, they are typically the only people to whom I send a Christmas card every year. This post is meant to celebrate them and all those other people who are a shining example of all that is good in this world. They are the people that we should be trying to emulate every day because the world would be a much better place if their example weren't the exception to the rule.

At every place that I frequent and I get good service from a particular person, I always ask for them and create a relationship.

For the extra service, I do give my minimum of 20% and for the high end place where I get exceptionally commensurate service, I do 25%. On christmas, my wife gives them cards, gifts, and I insert money.

For the breakfast place I used to frequent every Friday near my work, I would give every waiter, busboy, and cook an christmas card with money while my waitress gets a car, a gift, and double the money.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

A waitress I dated some years ago, among the usual cash tips during breakfast crowd, would get a few Pennsylvania Daily Lottery tickets, a few times a week, as a tip from a couple of Business men.

Yes, there were some winners. $20, $40 and two or three $160 wins.

She had amazing luck with Lottery wins.

Two things your friends did that stand out the most for me.

A. They look upon you as a friendship , not some employee.

B. Very eloquent writing.

There are good people, and there are good people that either don't express goodwill, and those that don't know how to.

A good post op and some good responses.

When I was in high school, I worked in a grocery store and some people who were regulars treated me really well.
Sometimes these people Teach us how to treat others. Too bad there is so little of that.

Sometimes it's the seemingly small things in life which make the greatest days possible. It seems you have been able to make a difference, and for that I commend you.

Happy Birthday, here's to many more.

Thank you for posting this. I run a small business and treasure these kinds of folks. I have even found this among the younger age groups. It generally reflects good parenting.

I think, in general, people complain more than they praise. There are millions of good people out there. We just don't remember them, or run into them. We do remember the dorks. It's nice when someone does notice exceptional help or service, or just plain old courtesy.
