Ives Responds to Rauner Criticism of Congressional Tax Reform

by Ives for Illinois | Jan. 4, 2018, 2:20pm

January 4, 2018 - On Wednesday, Governor Rauner called the new federal tax law “punishing,” criticizing a $10,000 cap on deducting state and local taxes. State Representative Jeanne Ives, a Republican Candidate for Governor released the following statement in response:

“The reason Illinois families are ‘punished’ by the $10,000 cap on State and Local Tax Deductions is because the guy who ran on reform in 2014 didn’t do anything about Illinois’ tax burden. He actually made it worse.

“Families in this state pay the highest property taxes in the nation. Governor Rauner did nothing about it. If Illinois put a hard cap on property taxes, like Indiana, then more Illinois families would qualify to keep more of their income under House Republicans tax reform plan. Further, more of those same Illinois families could afford more home and expect a real rate of return on their investment. This prospect is virtually eliminated in Illinois where the median property tax rates as a percentage of home value is nearly 2.5 times that of Indiana.

“Governor Rauner is talking about freezing property taxes. Well, again, Illinoisans pay the highest property taxes in the nation. Why would you want to lock that in by freezing them? We need to lower property taxes. I am advocating a property tax cap that will force state government to remove itself from initiatives it has proven poor at managing, and to properly fund K-12 education.

“According to the left-leaning Tax Policy Center, 80% of American families will see federal tax relief from the GOP tax cuts. Rauner is simply trying to out-#NeverTrump J.B. Pritzker. In substance and in rhetoric, Rauner is once again allied with Rahm, Pelosi and Schumer and against the Illinois GOP congressional delegation and Illinois GOP families. Another betrayal.

“The truth is, Governor Rauner failed to hold the Illinois Republican caucus together, and 15 Republicans voted to inflict a massive income tax hike on the already struggling families and businesses of this state. In Washington D.C., President Trump unified the Congressional Republican caucus to pass tax reform that will provide relief to most Americans. Bruce Rauner is out trying to sell a success as failure, and failure as success. It is little wonder Illinois Republicans feel they can no longer trust the man they elected in 2014.”

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

Americans Are Ditching These Five States In Record Numbers

Apparently surging violent crime, massive tax hikes and insolvent public pensions are bad for attracting new residents...who knew? On the other hand, 364 days of sunshine per year, minimal crime, brand new infrastructure and some of the lowest tax rates in the country seems to be, to our complete shock, somewhat appealing to folks looking to relocate.

Ha Ha - Obozo Day and no day off for state workers!

Here's a couple goodies from the linked article:
  • New law increases prison sentences from 3-14 years to 7-14 for some repeat gun crimes. "Critics counter . . . that the proposal could lead to a spike in arrests of African-American and Latino men." Uh, wouldn't they have been arrested anyway?
  • Defendants accused of murder will no longer be allowed to try to reduce their possible sentences using what’s known as the “gay panic” defense. Well, that sucks. Oops, I mean . . . .
  • People leaving the state prison system will now receive a copy of their birth certificate for free. I guess that was a high priority.
  • Public schools would have to provide a designated space for students to breastfeed and provide feminine hygiene products at no cost. More freebies from a bankrupt state.

Perfect. Just fucking perfect. I guess we don't have enough people on the freeways already.
I can't blame them leaving shitholes but I can bitch about them coming here and wanting to turn AZ into the type of shithole they ran from!
Please, please leave your CA or IL way of thinking there. No need to pack it with you.

Land of Lincoln: The third-world casa on the prairie
By Timothy Birdnow

In a recent blog post here at American Thinker, Thomas Lifson chronicles the tale of Harvey, Illinois, a failing community where government officials have stolen everything not nailed down. Now, having exhausted all sources of revenue, the municipality is facing insolvency.

Well, why wouldn't the people in charge of Harvey take liberties with the public treasury? The state legislature just broke the Illinois bank in a recent spending bill, setting the example for these minor potentates.

Apparently, the state legislature imbibed a bit too much eggnog over the holidays, passing over 200 new laws to drive away businesses, steal the residents' money, and yoke as many yokels as possible.

Here are some of the lowlights:

- A law forcing hairstylists, dry cleaners, and other businesses to post standard pricing for males or females. A man's haircut can no longer be cheaper than a woman's styling, nor can her dresses be more costly to clean.

- H.B. 1785 lets someone change the sex listed on his birth certificate without even having his genitalia mutilated to look like the opposite sex's.

- A new law forces car-dealers to remove stickers from cars before they are driven away – even before a test drive.

- One law opens the door for 16- and 17-year-olds to sign up to be organ- and tissue-donors when they apply for a driver's license or identification card.

- Obama's birthday is now an official state holiday.

- Phone services will have to foot the bill for women who are abused and need to change their phone numbers and whatnot.

- Judges will now be forced to waste time in divorce cases deciding custody of pets.

- A new law protects elephants from abuse in circuses, and any African or Asian elephants from circuses operating in Illinois.

- A guarantee that customers can post on Yelp.

- S.B. 1586 allows DNR to establish rules for the public to scatter ashes in a state park.

- S.B. 1884 provides that research facilities shall make reasonable efforts for adoption of dogs or cats previously used in research.

- S.B. 1761 provides that knowledge of sexual orientation is not a mitigating factor in criminal cases.

- H.B. 2369 forces public schools to provide breastfeeding accommodations for schoolgirls with babies.

Here is a complete list.

Now, here we have graft and corruption on an unprecedented scale in cities like Harvey and Chicago, and the state government does nothing. We have violence on a par with the Middle East and Honduras in Chicago, and the legislature worries about elephants and teenage breastfeeding. Illinois is broke and may well be the first state that actually goes into bankruptcy, but the legislature is worried about Obama's birthday and restaurant reviews on Yelp and hairstyling prices.

Four out of the last seven governors of Illinois went to prison. So did the Reverend Jesse Jackson's son, a U.S. congressman from Chicago.

Even the liberal Chicago Tribune calls Illinois one of the most corrupt states in the union.

It's also a state full of illegal aliens. One in seven Illinoisans are immigrants, with 450,000 official illegals. One point two million jobs are taken by aliens in Illinois. This is one of the most heavily invaded states in the Union. Naturally, the Prairie Barrio became a sanctuary state when the Republican governor, Bruce Rauner, signed a bill decreeing it thus.

With such utter disrespect for the law on the part of the highest officials in the land, why wouldn't some local big wheel develop sticky fingers? Illinois more closely resembles a Central American banana republic than a state in the U.S.

The infuriating thing about it is that when the chickens come home to roost, the people who looted the state will demand that the U.S. taxpayer bail them out and will refuse to relinquish power. House speaker for life James Madigan will no doubt remain to loot the bailout money, and the rest of us are going to be forced to subsidize their leftist hypocrisy and lavish lifestyles. And don't think for a minute that we won't; even if the president refuses, the courts will likely demand it, and the GOP in Congress will fear opposing it.

The only workable answer is to do a serious investigation into the entire Illinois government and start sending people – lots of people – to jail now.

I fear that Illinois is doomed.

KMitch200, I'm going to be one of them. Or maybe even 5 of them if I can get my daughter and her two children to move with us. We intend to leave Illinois within 2-3 years and we absolutely LOVE Arizona. Tired of the usual Illinois/Crook County/Chicago bullshit. Tired of getting colds or the flu every winter as well. But not to worry. My entire family is to the right of Atilla the Hun. The LAST thing we would bring with us is Chicago values or mindset.

If he were to get his free BC upon discharge from a state prison, would it be filled out in crayon?

I live just across the river in IA. When we moved here (from Japan) 24 years ago there was no question we'd live in IA.

I shoot at a nice private range in IL, but none of the new regs appear to affect me.

IL has a law for everything, and each has a catchy phrase. When I was practicing in STL I had to get licensed in MO and IL, we had a couple clients in IL and would end up in court there. My boss would tell me to look up the law for something and I would assume he was BS'ing. Sure enough there would be a law for not having your Mary Kay license and it would allow for treble damages, attorney's fees, punitive damages, costs, and a free lipstick.

Welcome to Illinois, the land ruled by democrats. I hope that the rest of the country looks at Illinois, New York, New Jersey, California, and every other Crap Hell Hole run by democrats that turned a once wonderful place into a turd world. It just shocks me that so many Americans are so ignorant stupid, foolish, short sided morons that keep propping up the democrat party, main stream media and rest of the progressive, and the liberal socialist that are bring OUR country down.
Maybe it's me and I'm missing something in the democrats master plan???
Nah, I don't think so!
And don't forget the Bernie supporters, cry baby genius snowflakes of our time!
Nah, again, I don't think so!
I think there must be lead in the water in these democrat strongholds? There is no other logical explanation?
