chbibcMy workout, my gym
A little light workout on a beautiful Saturday. 36" oak, will be great firewood in a year after it's split and dried.
My muscles are a little sore.

I have a wood burning insert. I have to cut some of those wheels thin (12") otherwise they're too heavy for me to move. The wood is dense and heavy.

A couple are Oaks and the majority are Hickory. I have to get this done pretty quickly because I have 8 more Hickory’s to get dropped.

Ox190I'd love to access to hickory to cut and split myself. I use a lot in my smoker. Having a pecan tree cut down in my front yard and another one trimmed on Monday. All of the pecan will be stacked to dry for smoker fuel.

Oz_ShadowReminds me of doing the same earlier this summer. Other than sore muscles I forgot to take off my ring. Hitting the wedge with a sledge pinched a huge blood blister that eventually exploded. That’s about when I noticed.

I never thought to do that at the time we were cutting and hauling. Counted tonight - 210 rings. Pretty old. Shame to lose it, but it was rotted at the base and came down due to the winds we had on Labor Day.

MNSIGI know it's pure heresy to the gym rats, but I've always preferred staying active with useful work over mindless repetitions on a machine.

I'm ignorant. Why would it take a year before you can use it as firewood?

There's a lot of moisture in fresh cut wood. Tough to get it to light and it wastes a lot of your heat boiling off the water.

Exactly. THe wood needs to season (dry out) to be best for burning. This oak is heavy and dense. In a year it will be perfect.

I can readily understand that it might be tough to get it to light but the idea of wasting heat to boil off the water is an eye opener and makes perfect sense. Thank you.

slosigI always use dry wood to start, but sometimes if you want a fire to burn for a while on “low heat”, adding fresher wood is just the ticket.

drill sgtA old trick --- after taken down the tree either by chainsaw or falling by mother nature is to leave it fully intack for a couple of weeks/months or as long as possible and the leaves will help dry out the larger limbs and body. But seasoning storage is still needed. ......................... drill sgt.
