I wonder why they are putting cars on 6-8 year loans. These cost as much as houses.

Yeah, it's pricey. The Lincoln navigator isn't much more expensive.

But, there are some ridiculous options on there... Rear Seat entertainment system for 2k?

That price is absolutely insane.

My dad bought one of the first Excursions way back when. Diesel, limited edition, etc. When he pre-ordered it I remember the dealership telling him it was the most expensive vehicle they had ever sold.

I want to say it was around $60,000, 17 or 18 years ago. Of course, dad being dad, he paid cash. But $60,000 back then still doesn't seem as crazy as $84,000 right now.

Knowing what one is talking about is widely admired but not strictly required here.

Although sometimes distracting, there is often a certain entertainment value to this easy standard.

Ford and Chevy trucks have some ridiculously priced window stickers. Yet these trucks are a dime a dozen. I dont know what kind of deals they are making. Just the window stickers make me not even go into find out.

When I bought my truck five years ago it stickered at $62 and I thought that that was obscene.

Hell, I bought an Expedition about eight years ago for around $30. What have they done in eight years to bump the price 50K?

Ridiculous. But, if people are willing to pay it....

That has got to be a large part of it.

Toyota is pretty proud of their Land Cruiser at some $85K the last time I looked.

Expedition MAX is the Suburban equivalent.

A 2017 Suburban Premier starts at $66k
2018 Expedition MAX Platinum starts at $75k

IIRC, my F150 stickered for around $48k & it's only a high trim 2wd XLT.

Unless I'm mistaken, the Platinum trim line has pretty much every option save a few as standard equipment. Think Escalade.

I'm not saying it's not a lot of money, I'm just saying for those that want it fully loaded these are the choices lots of folks seem to be making.

An Escalade would be comparable to a Navigator. They're releasing a Navigator based on the Expedition, so we'll see how much that costs pretty soon.

I saw some silly-stupid options on the Navigator...like the Navigator logo projected onto the ground like a floor mat.

I think Lincoln calls it 'Welcome Mat' also available on other Lincoln models. Personally not a fan & I'd take just regular puddle lamps instead.

Not much as people buy (I should say make payments) them left and right.
The inlaws had a 2015 Tahoe and now a 2017 Suburban. Not much savings off sticker. And they did a bunch of shopping around.

According to a inflation calculation, an item purchased in 2000 for $60,000 would cost today $85,945.30.

There's also a fair bit more technology in cars today than there was 18 years ago.

What really drives up the cost is the way certain packages packages require a different trim level. I don't want a power liftgate or power fold seats, but I do want lane keep assist--sorry, gotta have one to get the other.

Does the EPA drive some of this, with fleet standards that basically limit the ratio of guzzlers to sippers? If you are limited to the number of big trucks/SUVs that you can manufacture, then you gussy 'em up and sell 'em to the rich and/or foolish.

The budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed lest Rome become bankrupt. I think profit drives it.

SUVs are big profit. An SUV does not cost much more to manufacture than a small car. Both require R&D, plant retooling, and time on the assembly line.

Mentally, people can justify a pricey $60-80k standard SUV, because it's big and capable. For a sedan to cost $60-80k, people expect truly novel R&D, high end performance, and good fit and finish. It's much cheaper to extend the wheelbase of a truck, add seats, and slap an 80k sticker than it is to engineer a powerful sport sedan for the same 80k sticker.
