Friend and I are planning a short motorcycle trip into eastern Kentucky next week. Basing out of Grayson area, heading south for a day, then back up to Grayson the next.

Gather it is mining country, we like quiet, back country roads.

Anything to know? Places to go?

You probably already know about Motorcycle Roads...
But I'll just throw it out there just in case.

Red River Gorge and Natural Bridge are pretty popular. I haven’t spent too much time in the eastern part of the state so those are the only things I can think of.

I know very little about Kentucky, so the motorcycleroads link will be great. Will have to research Red River Gorge as well.

Thanks guys -

I'm about 40 miles east of there in WV. There isn't much around Grayson to specifically see but the area is pretty. Ride safely. Those roads aren't always the smoothest and the locals know every curve to cut to make the best time. Depending upon the distance you want to travel you can always cross the river into WV and check out the New River Gorge. Lots of small shops and restaurants around Fayetteville and pretty popular for riders. Regardless, be safe. I don't want to meet you while I'm working. No helmet law in Kentucky but WV requires them.

I have been to Berea, back in 1979, to look at the college. Will look into the tavern, should we get that far west.

Thanks Armedmd. Have seen some of WV last year about this time. From PA did Blue Ridge Parkway, then cut into WV above Roanoke and headed north east back toward PA. Beautiful, quiet country roads the whole way.

One memory of that trip - we passed an old Chevy Suburban that had a roof rack. Riding on the roof, side by side, were a pair of hound dogs, ears and lips flappin in the wind ...

Any particular reason you are headed south from Grayson???

You’ll need to head about an hour or so west to get to the Red River Gorge.
Miguels’s Pizza in Slade is what you want to hit if you head that way.
https://www.miguelspizza.com

It will be packed with climbers and campers this time of year so expect a little wait. There is not much else around to eat.

The Dainiel Boone National Forest starts a bit West of Grayson off I64 and heads south.

You all happen to be enduro type bikes if so this may give you some good routes. Straight road bikes not so much.

Next week is my kiddos fall break or I’d meet up at Miguel’s with you if you made it that way.

If you like Bourbon, the "Bourbon Trail" is in the Eastern part of the state with Bardstown and Frankfort having several major distilleries in the area.

We’re heading to Kentucky from PA. About 9+ hours to get to the state line on the east end. Then into Kentucky for two days of rural riding. The bikes are BMW touring bikes. We like doing 35 - 45 mph on beautiful days with almost zero traffic.

Might have to head over to the Red River.

How are the rural roads? Generally well kept?

You'll have to be most aware of the other drivers, moreso than the condition of the asphalt, which is generally good.

State park in Pineville is probably better than the 2 hotels in Harlan.

Nope that would be more towards the west.
About 3 or so hours west of Grayson.
