He's lucky you couldn't get a better shot quicker than that, or he'd be in the ground right now.

You had a chance to shoot Satan and you didn't take it! You could've stopped the next world war! Smile

Glad to hear you only had material damages. It's a relief no one was hurt.

That is a crazy story. It's truly good to hear that it had a fairly positive outcome (everything except the damage to the car). Reading your story just makes me mad thinking about the anti-gun people that think you shouldn't of had the ability to protect yourself and loved ones in that situation.

I'm glad to hear no one got hurt.

I admire your restraint, that's a tough situation.

I have never been in your situation, and i doubt many of us here are entitled to monday morning quarterback you. That said, i firmly believe that when he backed up and started forward at me after the rear end collision, i would have shot him.

That shows intent, assault with a deadly weapon, and a justifiable threat to your lives.

That would have been a good shoot IMO.

Wow, glad to hear you're OK. Sounds like you did the right thing, good job.

If you think gun magazines are objective or honest, when's the last time they wrote a truly negative review of a firearm? Do you really think all of those pre-production models they're shooting run as reliably and shoot as accurately as they say they do?

90% of gun malfunctions can be attributed to poor ammo (reloads, Russian, etc.), lack of maintenance, weak springs, cheap magazines, or improper technique. When a well-trained shooter using a wide variety of high quality ammunition fed from a reliable, self-leveling magazine shoots your gun after it's gone through a through inspection, spring replacement, and cleaning, and still has problems, then it's the gun. Until then, the problem is YOU.

Someone was going to set him off regardless. Better a person who was prepared to deal with him.

Still, I'm sorry for the damage to the vehicle.

Who knows what I would have done.

It will be cheaper to repair the Aviator than to live with the plans he had for your MIL. He may not get his license reinstated (he was licensed, was he not??).

Man, that's a crazy story. But, glad everything worked out.

In NJ, the law states that I have to let him run me over.

I read somewhere that the NRA claims there are 2.5 million 'defensive' uses of a firearm each year. A number of which the situation is de-escalated by the production of a firearm.

Janet Reno claimed 1 million. While I'm sure the true number lies in between somewhere, I always felt it was impossibly high.

Then I hear stories like this...

Best of luck! Take care!

i commend you on your incredible use of restraint. i'm not so sure i would have resisted quite as long to drop the hammer on him.

sorry about the damage to the vehicle and the stressful birthday for your family, but in the end, you can fix the car and look forward to more birthdays, hopefully not quite as "exciting" as this one was.

Like they say, "Any plane crash that you can walk away from is a good landing."

Glad you're all OK.

I may have responded differently with different tactics; we all would have to some greater or lesser degree, but the outcome was pretty good/lucky. It could have been much much worse.

Stay safe and keep us up to date on the perp's prosecution.

IMO, it wasn't really restraint. The OP knew he had to wait until they were in imminent danger before producing his weapon to end the situation.

So saying he displayed great restraint is like patting him on the back for not opening fire on a busy highway at 60mph.

I say props for being able to keep your head about you through altercation. Good job on having your firearm ready, getting your wife and FIL on the phone...and finally, you produced your weapon at the exact moment your lives came into direct danger. You would have been totally justified in firing. Also, good work not taking a shot you were not 100% on. The round could have missed your small target (his noggin) and zipped through the glass into traffic on the other side.

Fortunately you did not have to take a life to save those of yourself and your family. You should be very happy knowing that if and when the situation arises again...you'll be there, and won't hesitate to defend yourself and your loved ones.

Consider yourself lucky that you didn't run into this type of sociopath while on foot. I've had to deal with some of these nutjobs downtown & was glad that I only had to take care of myself. Trying to get another person to follow instructions without hesitation when they have no concept of prersonal protection & no street smarts is virtually impossible.

Though being subjected to vehicular assault at freeway speeds is certainly dangerous, one does have some insulation & protection inside their car. Especially for their family.

I'm glad to hear that it turned out well & that none of you was seriously injured. It's unfortunate however that this jackass survived his collision. He'll get an evaluation from the state, they'll dope him up & then they'll release him back into the public. You're cured son!

maybe you read some different replies than i did, but nobody said he should have produced his weapon at the insight of the altercation. he produced it at the right time for sure, but restraining from pulling the trigger upon pulling the weapon is what i was referring to, not restraining from pulling the weapon sooner. to me, if the weapon needs to come out of hiding, then the danger is imminent and requires immediate action, and in this case, there was a slight hesitation (for good reason), and that ended up saving the perp's life, more than likely.

Glad you and yours were not harmed. It's an excellent example of what I tell the wife and kids - you don't always get to pick when a bad situation arises, and that's why I carry.

I find it somewhat interesting that Satan was still able to understand that a gun was pointed at him and he needed to beat feet. I would have thought someone that hyped up or whacked out wouldn't care or understand the situation... Maybe that could be used against him if they try the insanity defense.
