Saturday was the day before my wife's birthday. To celebrate, my in laws and I decided to take my bride to her favorite restaurant. Only thing is.....It's 155 miles away. No big deal, we decided that would would rent a condo in Banner Elk NC, for the night.

So off from Sevierville, Tn. to Banner Elk, NC. we went.

All was going well until about an hour into the trip. I heard my Mother in law complaining about the driver ahead in the Oldsmobile. He was swerving all over the road and entered our lane. My MIL (mother in law) blew the horn at the offending car, and all hell broke loose.

The driver of the Olds began swerving his car like he was going to hit the side of our Aviator.

My mother tried speeding up, he sped up.
Tried slowing down, he slowed down.

All the while he was cursing and making "slitting throat gestures"

Both my wife and my father in law were on the phone with 911 at this point.
I sat in the seat behind the driver watching the guy intently.

My MIL was scared that she would have a high speed collision with the wacko, and decided to get off the Hwy much to my and my father in laws dismay.

Of course he followed.

It was at this point that I drew my pistol from its holster I kept it low and out of sight, watching the guy come sliding up behind us......

He rear ended us. Not very hard mind you, but still and impact.

Then he threw his car in reverse, and went into on coming lanes of traffic and slammed into the side of out car.

At this point I dropped the window and heard him say he was going to kill us and he was reaching for something behind his seat.

His attention seemed fixed on my MIL and Aimed my weapon at the only part of him I had a clear shot of, his head.

I was just about to shoot, when he looked back at me and saw I was drawing down on him.

He slammed the car in drive and sped off.

We were finally safe.

My wife and FIL were still on the phone with 911, and relayed to them what had happened.

So what happened to the dirt bag that attacked us.

Well after seeing me about to shoot him, he fled. Made it about 3 miles before crashing and leaving the car teetering on a storm drain.

When the officers found he he smelt of alcohol, and they discovered 8 empty beer bottles, and two full ones.

But.... It gets even better.......

They also found 3 different bottles of prescription pills.

But wait, it gets even better......

On the way to take the scumbag to the hospital to get a chemical blood test, he starts speaking in a totally different tone than his voice. Starts speaking in Spanish and German, and some other different languages that the officer has never heard of.

And FTW...... He claimed to be Satan. All of this out of a 23 y/o hillbilly.

After one day in the hospital, they felt they could not contain him, and had him sent to the state mental hospital.

Made for a memorable Birthday weekend for my bride.

Damage to the Aviator....$5500

The good news was after it was all over, we continued on to Zuzda (Awesome Tapas restaurant in Banner Elk.) and had a great time.

How the hell are you going to top that birthday next year?

I admire your restraint.

After the deliberate rear-ending, I would have put a stop to it/him.

Yes... but give thanks for..

1) Everyone in your vehicle was safe
2) You did not have to squeeze the trigger
3) The damage to the Aviator can be repaired

Excelant job keeping your wits about you , I know its difficult when everything is happening at once.

We'll hope for insurance from the bad guy , but it does not sound like thats going to be happening.

Every situation is so differant ,I am glad you used your head , best wishes

ummm.... wow.
I would like to hear follow ups on this at a later date. I assume charges will be pressed? What this guy actually ends up getting as punishment would interest me.
Also, good for you on the restraint. Glad no one was hurt.

Sorry about the car, but not everyone who has a run-in with Satan gets off that easy.

First off, I'm glad to hear none of you were injured.

I imagine it would have been justified to fire after being rear-ended, since he was already threatening, and acting in an unsafe manner. I probably wouldn't have fired then.

I'm curious after the guy rear ended you guys, was your vehicle disabled? If not, then accelerating out of the way after the guy tried to line up for the side hit might have been the way to go.

If that method was unavailable, I think shots fired at the driver as soon as he started to line up to be able to strike the side of your vehicle would have been warranted IMO since he's showing not only threats at that point but a distinct ability to use lethal force against you and the other people in the vehicle.

I assume you'll be pressing charges against the guy?

I am with everyone else. Not sure how you didn't end up in a highspeed chase with him following, or shooting him as he drove at your car.

Isn't it funny how no matter how drunk/ inebriated/ psychotic/ or stupid a person is, the sight of a gun barrel seems to almost always do the trick of sobering up. FWIW, I would have done the EXACT same thing, though I may have dropped the hammer on him.

Damn, I thought riding with my MIL was scary. Satan was going to get into something with someone that day. Good job to you with only a few variables under your control. How is your family?
