You need to know how to use those dogs to your advantage! I don't like the dogs anymore then you, but non of us have the right to take away that tradition of dog hunting. It has been around since before firearms.
That's interesting, in PA if you're out hunting and you witness a dog or dogs chasing big game they can be shot on sight.

Big Grin

With only one week left for buck in archery season I decided to take him instead of pushing my luck and hoping I would get another crack at the 8ptr that was a bit more typical and probably closer to 100" scoring wise. It was a tough decision but I feel I made the right one, I just hope that nobody shoots him so he's bigger for me next season Big Grin

There are a ton of bucks in this spot we hunt. There is 2 or 3 P&Y bucks back there that are VERY elusive. The smallest of which is a 10ptr. But no one has seen any signs of these guys since the summer time. We suspect they are on the posted property where nobody is allowed to hunt at all.

Plus this guy felt like the next step in the progression up the ladder for me. My first buck was a Y-buck back in 1994. I haven't archery hunted since 1995.

You did just fine.

Most white tail hunting is a lot more difficult than the tv shows make it look.

Well, I didn't get my buck this weekend. Got a doe. The hunting was very difficult. Might have been the 60 degree weather we had. Might go out the last weekend and give it another try.

Firearms opener is always November 15 here. I'll be out looking to fill our freezers. I'm a unrepentant meat hunter with a preference to big mature does. I'll take a buck if it's a decent one but let the little ones go for another season.

Tonight's dinner:

Oil, powdered garlic and mesquite seasoning. Tenderloin sliced in 1/2" thick slices and two sections of backstrap. Told my dad "Grill on low heat, flip once, 4 minutes on each side MAX. Keep an eye on them you'll probably be flipping them at around 3 minutes."

I don't have pictures of the finished product but, suffice it to say that it all went between my dad and I. I started with the tenderloin slices and good God it was like eating a filet mignon. Then I hit my piece of the backstrap and it was like eating meat flavored butter. I would've had to pay at least $125 for this meal at a restaurant. A nice bottle of vino and a backed potato were the perfect compliments.

Bow hunting last Friday I put a horrible shot on this buck and was lucky to find him. One hour after shooting him I filled my doe tag off the same stand. She was DRT!

I would like to here the story on the buck. Looks like a older one, his rack is very symetrical and would probably get you in the books if it were an Az Whitetail.
Congrats on a great buck. What state are you in?

I shot this one today. Got off work at 3:30 (early for once) and figured 1 hour of daylight would at least give me a chance to scout some deer. I found a spot in a woods I have not hunted in and sat 30 yards in from the field that just been harvested and fertilized with hog manure! The wind was blowing pretty hard. 15 minutes after setting up on a seat on the ground, (pretty much in the open) I saw this fella walking around at the edge of the field. The manure must have covered my scent as he walked fairly close to where I came in. I took a shot with him quartering toward me right in front of the left shoulder. After he took off I looked for my arrow, which I could not find, and found a couple drops of blood. I found some hair as well. Luckily he fell 20 yards along the field edge where the Jeep had no trouble navigating right to him. I had him field dressed and on the rack as it got dark.

It has been a while since I shot a deer with a bow. In fact this is the first deer taken with a set of string silencers I got as a karma a few years back! Good ol' Matthews MQ32/easton acc arrow with Spitfire mechanical broadhead. One less menace for you travelers on highway I-70!

Sigforall,
That's a dandy one anywhere for anybody! Nice going on finding him after the shot.

Try as we might, weird stuff happens sometimes.

Bow season here started in September and runs through the beginning of February. I've been out a few times and have had a few small bucks and a couple of small does I could have shot. The problem here is it's been too warm. I was out Saturday and it was nice in the morning but got up near 70 later. Even during the rut it really kept the movement down.

Season opens this Saturday. Damn, I'll be in Tulsa. We're coming home Sat nite so I'll go out first thing Sunday. 4 point minimum (per side) again this year. Some guys complain about it but not me, I generally let the smaller bucks grow up a bit.

Our firearms season starts Sat, Nov 14 and runs through Jan 2. Then the extended season for does only starts and runs through March 27 on private land.

I think as many deer are killed on the highway as during the regular firearms season. I have found that during the rut around here, you can expect to see one road kill every 20 to 25 miles average during a one week period. At times it can be one per five miles or less in some places.

This past week I saw six deer going west on a 110 mile drive and one bear yearling. Coming back another bear yearling in the east bound lane at the same place. This is a bear crossing area, Afton Mountain, and it is too bad they didn't put a tunnel under the road when they built the interstate. For some reason I just hate to see bears end up in this matter. Maybe I have been watching too many Marty Stouffer productions. Confused

Our gun season starts Thanksgiving day. I finished up one stand today and it is feeding corn now. The rivers are up in our area so one stand it blocked off due a creek being real high. Still need to plant and feed it but will probably hunt this closer to the rut.

I am very excited this year for the season. Feeling good about my new stand as the area hasnt been hunted in about 2 years, so hopefully something good is there. Looking forward to posting pictures of this years harvest.
