Holy smokes - I have a USNI first edition HFRO. I had no idea it was worth that much...

Correction - first edition, second USNI printing. ~$40, not $1,500. easy come, easy go

We hosted Tom Clancy for a few days on the USS IOWA, he was gathering info for RSR.

USNI made so much money off Clancy they had to offset it (they are a non-profit). They ended up sending a complete set of their professional books to the wardroom of every active Navy ship for free...

When I watch Hunt For Red October, it calls to mind how amazed I was at the destructive power of the B-52s I guarded when I was in SAC.
Until I learned about the Seawolf / Virginia class submarines. You Navy guys know what I mean.

I love the Hunt for Red October but don’t forget an earlier book he wrote Red Storm Rising. Supposedly he got access to the actual NATO playbook. Great reading!

I wouldn't say garbage but I know what you mean. I have no problem at all with the premise though, given the past year's events.

Red October was 1984; Red Storm was 1986. Wink

I forget which book but he put an afterword about the 'information' controversy. Most of it he would just request from the library of congress. He received the blueprints for building bombs, etc. But there is always the "he was really smart and worked really hard doing his research" aspect as well. What an amazing writer.

Yes, the later books kinda jumped the shark so to speak. Its like Dale Brown and Patrick McClanahan, how much can you have one guy do?

I really liked the Mark Greaney books but do not care for the other writers.

Anyway, HFRO is in my list of best books and movies. Even now when I read or think about Jack Ryan, my mental image is of Alec Baldwin and not Harrison Ford or the three new guys . . . No, it will always be Alec Baldwin imitating Sean Connery in the missile silo Smile

My former office mate served on the Seawolf, the Parche, and the Richard B Russell. He was part of many interesting things, none of which he could talk about...

HFRO was my first Clancy book. Got it when it first came out. I had just finished a classified school that had several submariners attending and the stories they told tracked so closely to a lot of info in the book that I thought it was actually written by some naval submariners. Kept expecting it to get pulled for all the things in it.

Should I assume you were a regular at that Vallejo establishment? Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

But honestly no, discussions about this included classified material not suitable in that venue.

Same held true when a number of us including a NRRO rep were discussing the Chernobyl event in basically real time as it happened. We were in a "vault" for that exchange. Big Grin

Back in the day my friend was in the marines. He told me I had to read this Clancy book RSR. It was great. I loved how it jumped around and how technical it was. I gave two copies away at Christmas. I loaned a paperback to a guy at work. He couldn't put it down, said it was the best thing he ever read.
