As the smoke clears, Republicans prepare for leadership fight

Just hours after Democrats took control of the House, Rep. Jim Jordan announced his intention to challenge for House Republican leader.

With the retirement of Speaker Paul Ryan, his deputy Kevin McCarthy was widely seen as the heir apparent. But there's been a conservative storm brewing for months, as many on the right don't trust McCarthy to advance a conservative agenda, and others would prefer a conservative alternative to McCarthy.

The Hill:

"I plan to run for minority leader," Jordan told Hill.TV's Buck Sexton on "Rising."

"In 2016, the American people elected Republicans to come here and change this town. I think the president is doing just that, but I don't think they see the same intensity from folks in Congress, folks in the House of Representatives," he continued.

"Have we replaced ObamaCare yet? Have we secured the border yet? Have we reformed welfare yet? No," he said.

Jordan went on to slam current GOP leadership in the House, saying they were not willing to engage in debate with Democrats.

"Now that we're in the minority, that's about all what we can do is debate, but fight hard in the debate for the principals, for the things that we know the American people sent us here to do in 2016. Show them that we deserve to be back in power in 2020," he said.

Jordan's comments come hours after he won his re-election bid in Ohio's 4th congressional district against Democrat Janet Garrett.

Earlier this year, Jordan, the co-founder of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, announced his bid to replace Speaker Paul Ryan after the Wisconsin Republican announced his retirement.

Jordan has been one of President Trump's staunchest allies on Capitol Hill, frequently slamming the Justice Department and special counsel Robert Mueller's probe into Russian election meddling, which Trump has called a "witch hunt."

There are two things working in Jordan's favor. Donald Trump is already blaming Paul Ryan for the defeat, making McCarthy a marked man. Second, the new batch of GOP congressmen coming to Washington will be more conservative and more pro-Trump. In fact, some currernt members who may have been lukewarm about supporting the president's agenda will have learned a valuable lesson from the mid terms. Not all Trump-backed candidates won their races, but a sizable number did, leaving the definite impression that it's better for one's political future to support the president.

Will Trump publicly back Jordan? As the minority party, unity for Republicans is crucial. Democrats marching in lockstep were able to block several of Trump's goals, including repeal of Obamacare and building the wall. The GOP will be unified on some issues, most notably, on opposing impeachment of the president. But Republicans need a leader who can not only persuade, but also crack the whip when necessary. The combative Jordan would probably be better at that task, and would be a stronger voice in support of the president's programs as well.

I think Trump will do away with precedent and back Jordan to the hilt. There is probably a strong desire among most remaining GOP House members for change at the top, and Jordan would certainly supply that.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

He'd have my vote, but I think Scalise will likely take over.

It's going to be Jordan. Deep state is running too many ads now telling what an upstanding conservative Andrew McCarthy is. Bullshit, anyone close to Paul Ryan is suspect. McCarthy is a fraud as a conservative and why the hell is he saturating the radio waves in Kentucky with ads promoting his conservative values, no accomplishments but he has strong feelings. Swamp creature, shun him. Roll Eyes

Trump values loyalty above all else and the rats fear Jordan bigtime else they wouldn't have tried to ruin him with a faked sex scandal.

Scalise would be fine and I admire him but Jordan is horny for the job and he's a leader. MAGA!

Problem is, Jordan is a bull in a china shop. Which is perfectly fine by me! But, too many don't like the approach.

Scalise is much tamer and he'll have the pity vote. I hate to put it that way, but....

I really hope Scalise is elected minority leader and not McCarthy. Jordan is rough around the edges, disliked intensely by many. I doubt very much he could be elected.
Steve Scalise is a Republican secular saint due to his near-assassination.

We have a fighter as POTUS, why not have one leading the cause in the House?

I personally like Ryan (hunkering down in advance) but he was a deal-maker not a fire-breather. At the time Republicans become the minority party in the House, I think it is an excellent time for a fire-breather, and here's why.

I suspect anything that gets done next Congress will be through deals with the devil.... which is to say, Trump and McConnell will have to make deals with the Pelosi crowd to get anything through. None of that will make us true believers happy - going to be a lot of insect parts in our breakfast cereal, come 2019.

So the R votes in the House will become show-votes anyway. Deal-making won't be done by R leadership in the house. Bills can't get critical mass without Ds on board. Other than done-deals negotiated with the Senate/POTUS, nothing will come to the House floor but liberal showpieces designed not to get enacted, but for political posturing.

Bottom line: the House Republicans no longer need a 'go along to get along' sort; they need someone to continue to make the cases for actual conservative principles while the Realpolitik goes on.

Republican Kevin McCarthy Wins House Minority Leader Seat

He was expected to secure it but still faced a notable challenge by Freedom Caucus member Jim Jordan

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) was able to win the minority leader position on Wednesday.

Congressional Republicans had a bittersweet midterm after results came in on Election Day, November 5. While they were able to maintain control of the Senate, it was a different story for the House.

McCarthy (shown above left) began bidding for the seat when his party lost the majority. He was the expected person to win but still faced a notable challenge by Freedom Caucus member Jim Jordan (above right).

House Republicans voted 159 to 43 for him during a closed meeting.

Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) opened the door for a possible replacement when he announced he wasn’t going to run again on April 11.

McCarthy will be officially replacing him when the new Congress starts in January.

He will also be coming in with an extensive congressional background dating back to 2006.

McCarthy has served in a leadership position for most of that time, including as chief deputy whip, majority whip and majority leader. He has tackled issues such as immigration, health care and technology.

He has also opposed many progressive environmental regulations over the years. Additionally, he was an early supporter of President Donald Trump back during his 2016 campaign.

McCarthy was highly critical of a program from the Obama administration to lower the carbon dioxide emitted by power generators known as the Clean Power Plan. He led efforts to use the Congressional Review Act to reverse numerous environmental regulations in 2017.

He was also at the forefront of trying to repeal the Affordable Care Act in 2017.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is expected to win her battle to become majority leader. She was quick to call for bipartisan cooperation in which both sides can work with the president after the midterm elections but warned Democrats would fight back if and when he did something that went against their principals.

Senate Republicans have started to fill some rolls as well in preparation for the upcoming term. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) was nominated Wednesday to become the next President Pro Tempore for instance. The position is one of the few that was envisioned by the founding fathers and puts him third in the line of presidential succession.
