Hey forum! Need some help. Unfortunately my 12 year old American Standard furnace had the blower motor go out. I've already tested that it's getting power and the rest of the system appears to be working fine. I also paid a tech to come out to confirm my findings. We discussed the replacement and the unit in my furnace has a motor and a control module attached since it's a variable-speed unit. It is quite expensive to replace. I had looked online and the price was around $800 for both pieces (motor/module). So, the company wanted $1650 to replace it. We had a good convo and he completely walked me through the removal and replacement as part of my diagnostic. I'm pretty handy and I think I can do this. I would prefer to go locally and I'm going to try today, but I'm assuming I may not be successful at the local electrical supply house. Subsequently I'm trying to find an alternative online that would be reputable and reasonable.
Here's the details on the two parts (that can be bought together or apart from what I understand).

I have found a couple of options online but I'm worried I'm out a lot of money if it doesn't work and I cannot return it. So any suggestions on what you would do would be greatly appreciated. I'm also willing to bring the tech back if I cannot feasibly do this. He said if I bought the motor they would install at $140/hr and it would be a 1 hr hour charge, no warranty. So we're still talking $600-700 savings but not sure if it's worth it. I think he was a straight-shooter :P but maybe you guys can tell me otherwise. I have already replaced a few things on the AC unit a few years ago so I'm comfortable working on it and would really like to save myself the extra money.
The tech recommended I replace both parts at the same time. I'm assuming the control module is the real problem and I'm guessing those aren't worth trying to rebuild. If it matters, there was a burning smell that occurred when the blower fan stop working.

A new motor and controller on ebay is $500 while used ones are about half the price.
A picture of the motor location would be helpful to determine the ease of changing the unit.
I replaced my variable speed blower motor about 3 years ago with an Evergreen unit which had an integrated module. If I recall, I could have bought the module separately but for just slightly more money, I got a new motor as well. It was roughly $300 through eBay.
Thanks so far. I did see some a few options on Ebay but used, I'll look harder. Any particular eBay seller you would trust? The big supply house here won't sell to non-contractors but gave me two companies who might.
Just fyi, I have already pulled the motor/control completely out and it's ready for a replacement. The tech and I took it out together and went through all the details on getting it back in place. I think I'm fine with that part.
My last furnace was a Lennox with VS, $800 for the DC module and $1000 for the motor. It failed at least a half dozen times, with a 10 yr warranty they took care of it. The first time it happened after the warranty expired I replaced it. A Lennox engineer actually came to my house to determine the problem, they said it was due to the ductwork modifications that the dealer did to install it. I refuse to have a VS now.
Yeah, the tech seemed pretty good. He ended up telling me that these things are a big part of his work. They parts are expensive and apparently air-flow is very important. He said he sees problems with the fancy furnace filters (especially at high elevation) causing restrictions and overheating them. I'm wondering if my switch from the $9.99 / 3 pack to the Costco fancy 3M ones put a dagger into my system. I have a cat and dog and had wanted better particulate filtration but I might have hosed myself.

Here is a rebuilt one for $320 verses a new one for $500.
I would check with either one of these sellers to make sure your spec for motor and module will work with their offering. Sometimes the motor shaft length can be different.

Can you have the motor rebuilt locally? I've had it done with pool pump motors. Maybe a cheaper option.

I had thought about this as well but so far nobody I've talked with has suggested that. I'm guessing the control module parts are designed specifically for this unit and might be hard to get.
I replace mine with an Evergreen unit from Amazon. I just looked up. I paid $265 with 2 day free shipping for my model. You will also need a puller to pull the turbine off the old blower.
For your particular situation, I'd probably stick with OEM parts.
QwikSwap V3 is an option. 229.95
Along with a 1/2 HP, PSC motor. 86.95
Otherwise with some modifications (see notes), you could install an Evergreen 6005, 1/2 HP. 239.95

No matter which option you choose, make sure to select the proper speed taps, to allow for proper airflow for the hi/lo heat and cooling operations.
Buddy of mine that was in the A/C biz told me that, since my system is no longer under warranty, I should replace any parts with Trane parts. Might cost a little more, but it's worth the extra cost over American Standard. Blower wasn't working one morning when I got up, but thankfully it was only the capacitor, so no major repair cost yet. Buddy said a new install would run $6k - $8k depending on how crazy you wanted to get.

Hey, Excam Man, thanks a bunch. I'm planning to go the OEM route. Couple of questions still if you don't mind... The OEM parts you linked don't seem to align with the same part nos. as the existing motor/control. Is that because they're Trane nos. but still compatible? Maybe a new/comparable model? I didn't see mine listed as an alternative part no. either on the link. So on the the actual part I removed it shows D341314P04 : MOTO9232 on the sticker on the control. Which I can find online. The motor has a sticker that shows model: 5SME39HL 0252 for reference. Note, I get AS/Trane are same company-ish.
Also, would you suggest I replace both the control module and the motor together? Or start with just the control? Noting, I took the control module off and it looks like a capacitor blew. There's a hole the top of it (one of two) and a corresponding burn mark on the inside of the metal motor housing. I have not tried to test the motor by itself yet.
Lastly, not sure I understand what you mean by selecting the proper speed taps. I was under the impression I would just it was plug in play. There's two harness connections from the control board to control module/motor. One power (5 pins) and one logic (16 pins) it appears. Similar to PCs boards in a way. And also a thermo-limiter I believe that's attached to the fan housing unit that has a lead on each side (it looks like a black circular silicon chip with two metal leads to connect back to the control board). Is there something I need to do beyond just reconnecting those items? I don't recall anything else we did when removing it other than of course the handful of screws and such.

Very common for part numbers to get superseded.
AmStd/Trane is the same company. Like Chevy/GMC.

Since your going OEM, your speed settings will be the same. So as long as they was set correctly when installed, they should be correct. But you know how things go, when you assume the previous tech did things correctly.
It is recommended to change both the motor and control.

Had a chance to sleep on this and just had one more question if you don't mind. So in looking at these two options. The Evergreen is a complete unit right? motor/control combined...that's how I read it...
I don't see anything else I'd need. I was about to add the Trane parts to the repair clinic cart and realized it's almost 4 times as expensive and the control is out of stock on their site so I'd have to order elsewhere and pay more. So, just me thinking about option b. Plus my system is 12 years old and I believe out of warranty now.
^^^. bump to see if Excam man or anyone knows the answer to my question above on the Evergreen motor. The wiring harness looks different and kind of confused me. I called the suppyhouse CSRs but they couldn’t confirm if it would work with my furnace after 10 mins on the phone.
It's the complete package.
As I stated earlier, the manufacture does not recommend it and I don't recommend it for a DIYer.
