Free app shows all your wifi devices and others that apparently are using it as well. What do I do with this info, just change password or what?

I just log into my router to see this. I can block any interlopers, although I've had no such problems.

Surprisingly, When I worked for a municipal water/wastewater utility, I had to suspend one of the night water treatment plant operators. He would constantly be caught parked in neighborhoods with his laptop tapped in peoples Wi-fi. It didn't make sense as the Treatment plant had internet service. Two guys on duty, one stayed at the plant, the other would roam from well house to well house double checking to see if the computer screen was correct.

I use Fing.

It makes sense if you're trying get around porn/gambling filters.

Same here. No additional software required. One of my son's friends is notorious for accessing content I have told him is not permitted on my network, so I simply went into my router and nuked his access. No need to change passwords as even with the valid password he cannot log onto my WiFi network.

Ripley - bigdeal has the idea. If someone is sniffing your wifi don't just change the password. Nuke them from accessing it in the future. And if you are uncertain if was anyone you have given the password to, then you can change out.

You don't want anyone you don't trust having access. Porn & gambling are one thing. Piracy & hacking are another.

Exactly. What am I missing? Why would you need an app?

Also, for my mifi or phone's hotspot, I simply only allow one device to connect, or I only allow "allowed" devices which are only mine.

I nuke everyone and white list my devices, and those of my friends.

 
My DHCP server sends me an email every day with new leases listed. Since every device we own has either a static IP or a DHCP reservation, any lease appearing in the pool is an intruder. So far, it's never happened.

If you have a decently strong PW for your router, and don’t give it out, I don’t see how anyone else could use your WiFi. Am I wrong about that?

If you have internet through Comcast, its part of their setup that they use your internet to let other Comcast Xfinity customers access the internet using their account access.

You have to go to your Comcast settings and manually shut it off.

I've been all over town and I'll see Xfinity and can log in with my mobile device and use someone else's internet access.

I'm not saying it's malicious, but I wouldn't run that app unless I knew it was legit/safe and not looking for your data. Especially knowing you can log into your router and see this information at any time.

I have Charter/Spectrum and would not be surprised if they're doing the same thing.

This app is far quicker to access than my router info so I thought what the hey.

So if I access my router info, what exactly does "nuke" mean? I can deny access to devices I specify? FWIW I highly doubt anyone hacked my PW and I don't plan on changing it.

I just cross checked my Netgear info with the Who's On My Wifi app, the app is showing a device as "connected" that doesn't appear on the Netgear program. I see how to block devices on the Netgear but that's of no use when the offender isn't listed.

And is the app prompting you to pay money to get access to the ability to block this "device"?

I don't think so. The app has additional functionality I've not looked into, I guess that's not free.


I'll listen to Kim Komando on Saturday nights, she mentioned the app. She seems to look after her listeners and has been around long enough, I have some trust in her. I know she's not the final say in things techy, pretty basic but useful for those of us with only so much time and inclination to jump in with both feet.


I'm thinking maybe this additional device is due to Spectrum having customers "sharing" bandwidth or whatever you call it.

Personally, I'd be far more inclined to believe the results I got via my router than through some third party program.

And as to "nuking" someone from your network, you use their MAC Address in the "Access Control" section of your router's functions.

I just named my router "FBI Surveillance Van," and haven't had any problems. But also I use the utilities that came with the router to manage it.

This is how I do it but I don't really check often. Usually only when I am having issues and am logged into my router.
