Also, the courts have ruled that the police have NO duty to protect you. You cannot sue an officer for failing to intervene in a situation.

So...
you can't protect yourself,
The police don't have to protect you
The city isn't liable,
The protestors can't be caught/ punished.

That's why you get situations like these. It'll only get worse until we can hold someone responsible.

I shall respect you until you open your mouth, from that point on, you must earn it yourself.

So, a jackass can stand in the middle of an intersection, threaten drivers with assault, and punch vehicles (a clear sign of intelligence), and NOTHING can be done?

I guarantee you if a driver had taken that bozo up on his offer, those officers would have been right there to arrest him for assault.

Yes. It's the opposite of the broken windows theory. The mayor lets crap happen, and criminals realize that it's ok, so as a result, you get more crime.

Yeah, because the GDFC mayor and Chief Outlaw (whose background seems to be a lot more about policing the police rather than policing the community) ordered them to leave the protesters alone. Don't be hating the cops for this, it wasn't their decision.

So, that movement I've been talking about where the liberals want to disarm the police in Portland, starting with the University Police... Well, for those cops aren't going to do anything , then may as well disarm them.

That motorcycle cop who is standing there does not need a gun.

It's getting very tough for conservatives like me to take a stand in support of cops like him.

I really can't defend his actions regardless of his orders from the Mayor, so screw him, and take away his gun.

Then maybe quit?

They supposedly became cops for a reason.

I wonder how many fire fighters would remain on the job if the chief told them they no longer are allowed to put out fires or help folks with medical emergency's.

Not a fair analogy. Firefighters and EMTs don't get involved in political disagreements as part of their job (yes, I know that some things - like contract negotiations or who the next Chief should be - can become very political. My BIL is a retired PFB Lieutenant.), they're there to save lives, period. There are no sides to take in their jobs.

Yes, cops become cops for a reason. All kinds of different reasons. Some feel a calling to "do the right thing, whatever that may be". Some of those cops may feel inclined to resign after too much of this shit. Others take the job because it's what they're best suited for, and I'm sure there are a number of other reasons why people become cops. Remember that besides being cops, they're also people who have families and mortgages and all the other obligations that you and I have. Would you walk away from a decent career because you're occasionally told to do something you disagree with?

It depends. If I am asked to oppress innocent people or allow them to be oppressed , then yes, I would refuse. But I have principles.

Yes, if what I was told to do was fundamentally anathema to my calling or sense of honor.

Seeing people abused on your streets, and doing nothing to stop it, or escort them through, or at least keep the protesters from directly and physically interfering with people going about their rightful business and doing nothing because your bosses are shitbags is no excuse. Either do you job, get the blue flu by way of protest, or raise hell openly and publicly through your union.

Embarrass the leadership so much that they are compelled to act.

And yes, I am ok with a public servant getting the blue flu in a case like this. Show the population what happens when cops AREN'T around.

If the cops won't shame their leadership, we, the public, should shame the cops.

If they were told they were no longer allowed to issue tickets for jay walking, then no worries.

Being told to sit there and watch while traffic is disrupted, people are being threatened, older folks and the handicapped are being assaulted, property is being damaged? That is something more than an occasional disagreement.

I understand they have bills, but to become the police takes a certain amount of motivation I would think. If you are no longer allowed to be the police, whats the point?

Not to mention, you look like a total useless turd just sitting there while all this goes down. How embarrassing is that?

It's not about politics anyway. It's about the law and the law is being broken.

I agree with those who cannot condone the cop's behavior here. If that's the position they seek in life, then fill the position correctly! I know it's easy for me to say move to another town, but dammit, if you want to be a good cop, be one somewhere it's appreciated.

Principles don't pay your rent after you get fired and likely dragged into civil court for being mean to the protesters. I understand your position, but sometimes practicality overrides principles. Maybe not for you, I don't know you. But for a young officer with a family and not a lot of reserve cash on hand, the prospect of losing your job can be a pretty powerful motivator. Just sayin, y'know? I don't like the fact that they stayed out of it any more than you do, we just differ on where the blame for it lays.

OK, enough. You are actually trying to defend their behavior? I am telling you- enough.

They held up their hand and swore an oath. Sitting on your freaking cop cycle and watching the law being broken and citizens accosted is a violation of their oath of office and don't tell me how the police chief "tied their hands".

The military addresses this kind of thing- soldiers are not obligated to obey illegal or immoral orders. Yes, the police officers might be fired/demoted/whatever- for doing the right thing and upholding their OATH. OF. OFFICE.

End of story

Anyone whose job is that screwed-up, that that they've gotten so far away from what they're supposed to do, that they have arrived at the opposite position, shouldn't worry about being fired. They should worry about what the fuck is going on with themselves and what's going on with their integrity, that they would actually put up with this kind of utterly amoral horse shit.

Jobs are everywhere. Your integrity, however, is irreplacable.
