Police: Man fatally shoots 3 people he says broke into East Side home

Three people were killed in a Sunday evening shooting in the East Side neighborhood on the Far South Side.

A police source said a man shot the three people after they broke into his home. No charges have been filed against the homeowner, who had a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification card.

Police, however, are still trying to confirm that account.

“We have noticed inconsistencies in his story and detectives are continuing to investigate,” police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said Monday morning.

“We’re in the middle of the interrogation,” Guglielmi said, noting that he could not share any additional details. “We’re pressing pretty hard.”

Guglielmi said the man is 31.

A 17-year-old boy, 22-year-old man and 24-year-old woman all suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the body at 5:30 p.m. in the 10200 block of South Ewing and were pronounced dead at the scene, according to police and the medical examiner’s office. Their identities had not been released.

Police entered the residence and found the homeowner locked in a basement bedroom and the bodies of the three people on the ground, NBC5 News reported. Police were investigating the shooting as self-defense. Area South detectives were conducting a homicide investigation.

Ald. Susan Sadlowski Garza’s 10th Ward office is about three blocks south of the home where the shooting occurred.

“Right now they’re calling it self-defense,” she said, noting that she’d received details about the shooting from the commander of the 4th District police station.

“I an understand people’s fear,” she said, relating to how the homeowner said he reacted after finding intruders inside his home.

Sadlowski Garza could offer no additional details.

The shooting happened on the same block as St. Francis de Sales High School and steps away from 103rd and Ewing, where a bus picks up students who attend Catholic schools in other parts of the city, according to one local resident.

It was unclear whether the intruders were armed, NBC5 reported. No other injuries were reported in the shooting.

Ivan Real, who told NBC5 he is a close friend of the homeowner, said there have been a lot of home invasions in the neighborhood recently.

“There have been a lot of home invasions in this area, so that didn’t come to me as a surprise, but I’m flabbergasted because it happened to one of my close friends,” Real told NBC5 News. “I’m really just concerned for my friend and glad he’s OK.”

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

Pretty biased story. For example:
quote:

What the hell does either of these facts have to do with a Sunday shooting? Who cares if it's steps away from the school bus stop if it didn't happen when kids were waiting for the bus?

How about writing about the arrest records for the 3 people shot?

Every one of those shootings except for Old Town,Portage Park and Chicago Lawn are gang infested neighborhoods where quite frankly, unless you are looking to buy a bag, none of us would go too. Unless we were working and had to.

Latest update from WGN:

– Police say charges are now pending against a homeowner who shot and killed three intruders inside his Southeast Side home.

The homeowner told police three people broke into his home Sunday night through the basement and he acted in self-defense, shooting the alleged intruders before locking himself inside a room and calling police.

When police arrived at the scene at 103rd and south Ewing, they found the bodies of a 22-year-old man, 24-year-old woman and a 17-year-old boy inside.

One was shot in the head, the others were shot multiple times.

YEP. The story does not add up.

Maybe.

Maybe not. I hope the homeowner has a good lawyer.

Bottom line: if three people broke into the house and wound up getting themselves deadified in the process, that's NOT bad news.

Thanks,

If charges are pending, however, Detective Paul Harvey must have discovered....the rest of the story.

My best guess it was an ambush killing. Homeowner tired of break ins, hides in basement with lights off waiting for intruder. It will come out shortly, thanks to Chicago detectives.

I do not see this as bad news. I doubt these folks were asking for directions. I suspect we will see some history of arrests for the deceased.

Gee, what a surprise...

Police: 'Inconsistencies' in man's claims that 3 people he killed were intruders

Chicago police say there are "inconsistencies" in a man's claims that he shot and killed three people after they broke into his home on the Southeast Side over the weekend.

The man, in his 30s, was taken in for questioning after officers responded to a 911 call around 5:30 p.m. Sunday and found a teenage boy, a woman and a man dead from gunshot wounds inside the home in the 10200 block of South Ewing Avenue, police said.

He was later released, but police said they are still trying to get answers to their questions through an attorney the man has hired.

"We noticed inconsistencies in the initial version of events that was told to detectives, as well as with the crime scene," chief police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said.

I can't get into specifics as to what those are, given there is an ongoing interrogation," he added. "But the homeowner has now retained counsel, and we are working with his attorney to get our questions answered."

The man told police that the three entered his home through the basement. He said he shot them, then locked himself in his bedroom, according to police.

Responding officers found 17-year-old Antonio Lopez, 22-year-old Narcisco Ledesma and 24-year-old Celeste Cockriel dead of gunshot wounds, police said.

Ledesma was shot in the head, and Lopez suffered multiple gunshot wounds, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Police have said the man at the home has a valid firearm owner's identification card.

It would be suspicious to find the bodies on the wall. Unless one of them was named Art.

And the bodies were on the FLOOR not the ground. If they were on the ground under the house, it would be suspicious, unless one was named Doug and another name Ole.

That was funny. At least it was grammatically correct with no apparent spelling errors.

I didn't note any inconsistencies in the story as reported in this thread. Apparently the police have other information that does not jibe? Did the deceased have any weapons? Did they have any known connections? Did the 3 people have a relationship with each other? Inquiring minds want to know. We might assume that the Lopez kid might be Hispanic, but the other 2 aren't easy to pin down. The ethnicities have not been revealed.
