Last year, as many of you know, my son was diagnosed with acute kidney disease. MPGN type 3, specifically. He was put on prednisone and, after some complications, blood pressure medicine. Everything seemed to be going well, his creatinine levels dropped, the protein levels in his urine went from 90 times the normal level to 30 times. But recently his blood creatinine levels stopped dropping and then started rising.

We are performing a creatinine clearance test again today but I'm wondering what can I do to help until we can see the doctor again (appointment 1/29) ? Diet changes, foods that help, foods to avoid? What are real recommendations? I'd imagine limiting protein to give the kidneys a break may help but I'm just remembering something I read years ago.

Thanks for listening to my late night, can't sleep, babble fest.

As you mentioned, limiting protein and eating more fruits and vegetables. Here are more items. I hope this helps and praying that this situation gets permanently resolved or controlled !!! God Bless Smile

Thanks. That's what I'm looking for. I googled it and the pages were all about Chinese herbs and had terrible grammar. The one you posted looks legitimate.

While I'm going to discuss it with the nephrologist, I can't imagine limiting meat will hurt anything but his opinion of me.

I have chronic kidney stones, Pulmonary Sarcoidosis, and AVN in my right hip.
I decided, mainly on a whim, to go about 97% vegetarian. I dropped meat and nearly all dairy.
This is against my nature AND my nurture. When I was born mom & dad had a dairy. I was raised with and still own beef cattle. Even in the leanest years, we ALWAYS had meat.

Unfortunately, the diet seemed to work (dammit!)

My numbers associated with kidney stone production dropped to “below normal” in some cases (actually good for my situation)
My lungs seemed to work better.
My hip didn’t hurt NEAR as much. (I’ll still have to address it, the bone is dead)
Also, and I’m sure (hopefully) your son doesn’t have these problems yet;
all those little morning aches and pains that come with age, mileage and abuse? They went away.
My guts even worked better what with all the fiber I was getting.

I really like bacon. Even a mediocre ribeye is almost a religious experience.
And I miss my cheese filled hamburger logs wrapped with bacon...

But I can tell when I fall off the veggie wagon.

So, that has been my experience. 46 year old sample selection of one.

Thanks for that. When my boy was little he was mostly vegetarian. He just wouldn't eat anything except peppers and potatoes. He still has a daily veggie lunch but he's become a meat and potato guy. Now the doctor took him off potatoes and now I'm going to take meat away.

no one here knows your boys test results,
a nephrologist is the person you need to consult.

this isn't a finger cut or pimple, there are a dozen factors to consider.

Speaking from personal knowledge ... bendable is spot on.
I was almost certain that this was covered in the original post but okay. I do appreciate your concern. If your personal knowledge includes something concerning that a temporary vegetarian diet will do my son harm then I'd be glad to listen. His nephrologist has already restricted potatoes, bananas, tomatoes and oranges but that's because one of his blood pressure medications causes an overabundance of potassium. The restriction has worked so far and his potassium has been in the normal range.

How much water does your son drink?

My wife is a strong advocate for drinking water to help the kidney do its job. Or maybe it's for the liver. In any case, I don't think adequate water will hurt.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." We do have to get on him to drink enough water. Some days he's fine, others he would rather watch YouTube all day and forget about water.

Today he drank lots because he is doing the 24 hour creatinine and protein clearance test. I think he considers it a challenge to fill up at least one 3 liter jug.

There was a time when his sodium dropped too low that they restricted his fluid intake but that's been handled and the restriction was lifted. Seemed counterintuitive to limit fluid for a kidney patient but we followed instructions.

So what kind of water do you have?? bottled, tap or filtered?
You can get a good water filter that takes the chlorine out and makes it taste a lot better.

Pure-Earth.com has the kind that screw onto the faucet and will filter 10,000 gallons.

The DOUBLE COUNTERTOP WATER FILTER - KDF/GAC PLUS CARBON BLOCK is the one I use and at a great price of $139.40 and shipping is free.

Mark123 before you limit his protein check with his nephrologist. My kidneys failed a few years ago, I am now on dialysis, they do labs on a regular basis, they really harp on keeping up my protein levels, keeping my phosphate levels at a certain level, I am supposed to limit my fluid intake to 32 ounces a day including the liquid in food, I take a phosphate binder before meals and snacks, things that are high in phosphates are potatoes, tomatoes, dairy products, cola (phosphoric acid gives then that tart flavor) so there are a lot of things to consider that his nephrologist will be able to explain in detail.
Wishing you and him the best David.

Thanks for the info. At the last appointment the nephrologist asked me to increase his fluid intake and limit potassium.

Under sink filter. The city water has so much chlorine that it's undrinkable without filtering.
