Urk...can you imagine that poor SSgt and his chain of command? OOPS! Eek

He's probably a Senior Airman now

The new CMSAF named JoAnne Bass posted on FB and some dumbass smart alec SSgt Banks asks her how her name is pronounced: "Is it bass or bass?"

To which she replies:

“Hmm, seems like you and a few of your friends enjoy trolling our Air Force sites. Give me a call Monday…I’d like to chat about it. Maybe I’m missing something.”

Followed by another: “Oh I absolutely have a sense of humour…love to have fun and laugh. But disrespect, trolling…doesn’t go over well with me. My team has SSgt Banks’ info…as well as his crew.. I’m sure there’s a solid explanation. Right?!?!”

I get updates from an Air Force Security Forces humor group, and there were TONS of memes about "Civilian-select Banks" coming in to work that Monday. . .

I really like how the Chief handled this. Apparently, there were dozens of people making that same dumb joke (is it pronounced "Bass" or "Bass") (either like the fish or the musical instrument). Her point was, once may be an innocent question. But, dozens of times, it equates to trolling. This wasn't like here, where we can 'hide' behind our made-up names. This guy's title was listed as "SSgt Banks," meaning that everybody could see he was affiliated with the USAF.

She had a follow-up message on Facebook after the conversation, explaining how it is important to maintain customs and courtesies even over social media. Her point was that one would not ask that to her face, so why would it be ok to do it on Facebook? I'm sure he had some explaining to do once his unit saw the crap-storm of unwanted high-level attention that was directed his way. No Command Chief, First Sergeant, Superintendent, or supervisor wants that kind of attention from the Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force. . .

Her follow-up message explained that there was (apparently) no punishment for the SSgt (from her, at least), and she explained her motives. Then the best part, she ended it with "And, by the way, it's pronounced "Bass"."

He should experience a significant emotional event. If he is otherwise a good troop and is appropriately remorseful, the chain of command will consider this as furthering his education and development as an Airman, but he will be a focal point of the senior NCO's in his orbit. If he is otherwise a pain in the ass, the cloud will follow him and good things will not happen for him in his career and he will get out.

I think she sounds like an asshole.

Number one, I doubt you can consider a Facebook page one of "our Air Force sites." It's there at the pleasure of Facebook.

Number two, who the heck posts something like that using their real name? SSgt Banks? Never seen anyone on Facebook set up an acct under a real rank and name unless its an "official" account.

Number three, calling the guy out with "call me on Monday, we know who you are" smacks of pettiness. If she knew who he was, it should have been handled quietly. Putting discipline out there for all to see is unprofessional.

She sounds like the quintessential toxic leader.

I immediately equated her response To something Captain Sobel from Band of Brothers, would have done.....

I served with a few of those “leaders” when I was in. I imagine the Sgt has had a bad week.

Frankly someone shouldn’t be upset when someone else asks how to pronounce your name properly. My last name is constantly misspelled, in my first four years of service- my paychecks were misspelled. I didn’t freak out. I just cashed them.

Chief Bass is dealing with Air Force policy that prohibits inappropriate use of social media to disrespect or harass fellow Airmen. She is trying to get the message out loud and clear Air Force wide that there is no room for it in Air Force culture. I am sure she is in lock step with the Chief of Staff. Here is an article from AF Times three weeks ago on her take on social media harassment of two female Airmen. If you use social media to disrespect fellow Airmen expect to be stepped on. Apparently SSgt Banks did not read the article or get the word.

Had I pulled a stunt like this on the CSMUSAF, I would have found myself standing outside the base gate with my luggage, waiting on the bus!
How can people in the service be so stupid on Social Media?

I think the worst of it is that he and his buddies posted multiple times on multiple official sites. Either just dumb, or REALLY belligerent.

Yeah, they were actively trolling, which is being actively insubordinate. She put a stop to it.

She didn't 'punish' the SSgt, per se. But she DID handle it in a public manner. Perhaps some people think this inappropriate, but I think it sends a solid message. How many people would have heard about this had it not been out there for all to see? SSgt Banks trolled the CMSAF in full public view. She responded in full public view.

Needless to say, after this, nobody in the USAF can plead ignorance. If they do it again, I would expect them to get really hammered (as should anybody who is blatantly disrespectful to those in authority). This was just a shot across the bow. Next time, she will fire for effect.

Bass like the fish

Bass like the guitar

Two different ways of saying the same word...

Does it sound like the fish (bass) or the instrument (bass)?

This is about the Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force. This is the highest non-commissioned rank in the Air Force. There is one of these, world wide. She is a BIG DEAL. She is the personal adviser to the Chief of Staff of the Air Force, and the Secretary of the Air Force for all 600,000 enlisted airmen.

I was an Army captain, and if speaking to her I would call her "Chief Master Sergeant Bass" the first time in an interaction I addressed her, and "Chief Bass" if the conversation continued. She would never be "Sergeant Bass" or simply "Bass".

This rank indicates a level of commitment to the Air Force, a commitment to excellence, and a dedication to the institution of the Air Force and it's airmen that is extraordinary.

SSG Banks is one of almost 62,000 SSGs in the USAF. He knew he was being an ass in public, and he knew he was being disrespectful.

This is a prime example of don't start none, won't be none, and SSG Banks behaved like an idiot.

Eah quite Petty IMO. But he’s also a dumbass.

“IF” the guy posted multiple times then have his superior talk to him and be done with it.

He wasn’t disrespectful to her from the message I wrote. So if she doesn’t like Facebook perhaps she should find an official AF app to spread her word.

Every high ranking female I ever met in the military loves to swing their imaginary dick around as much as they can. She is being petty. But this guy is a real dip shit.
As a specialist I got to meet command sergeant major of the army Preston. They didn’t even need to tell us not to get cute with him or what to say or not say. It’s pretty much common sense not to fuck with anyone higher up on the food chain than you, let alone the someone who is at the damn top of it and could sling the biggest ball of shit down the mountain your way if they wanted.
