Downtownv, email sent.

I have used a CPAP for 14 years. I can't/won't sleep without it. Amazing difference.

I wanted to add an amusing side benefit of wearing it. I can put the covers completely over my head and still be able to breathe. Great for sleeping in a light room, cold room, etc. Smile

"Does anyone else here have sleep apnea and have to wear a CPAP? Any tricks or advice you can give me?"

I was DX'd around 1995. First night on CPAP changed my life.

Used the damn thing 10 straight years. Lost a LOT of weight. Then didn't need it per my sleep specialist.

It was hard to get used to the sound of NO CPAP pleasantly pumping away in the corner at night.

Went thru a jillion different nose hose gear to find comfort...which then would change every now & then.

Been off CPAP now nearly 15 years. Most nights are interrupted only by Mr. Bladder wanting to go for 'walkies'.....

Recently bought a unit from Downtownv as well. He had a wealth of information which allowed me to make a decision I was happy with. He also recommended an easily tolerated face mast that was effortless to get used to.
Thanks!

Just got my referral for a sleep study. Full expect that I’ll be joining the ranks of the CPAP users here before long. Will have to hit you up downtownv if that happens.

Finally got the results myself.

Moderate apnea with AHI of 16.7 hr. 11 obstructive and 87 hypopneas in 6 hours. Going to order a CPAP here soon. The chart matches my thoughts of not being able to sleep on my back. I may also try the tennis ball in the shirt trick to stay off my back at night.

Thanks all for the information and experiences, and thanks to the OP for posting.

Well, tonight’s the big night.

Took a while to get this all finally straightened out between dealing with an incompetent sleep doctor’s office and fighting my insurance company, ended up switching sleep doctors and the new one got it all sorted out after ONE DAY and had my gear shipped to me.

Since I have a severely deviated septum and have never really felt like I can breathe well through my nose only, I’ve breathe through my mouth to compensate for years now and the nasal type CPAP mask is a no-go.

Once I told the doc that, she prescribed this newer type that covers the bottom of the nose and the mouth and has the hose on top which is supposed to be good for back sleepers like me too.

I’m sure it will take a while but I’m looking forward to not driving my poor wife crazy with loud snoring and gasping and choking all night, plus I’ve not slept well in YEARS. Looking forward to some good restful sleep and not waking up every morning feeling like dog shit and being grouchy.

This is the mask, it’s a Philips DreamWear. Going to try it for a few weeks and see if this works, the other one I’m looking at is the Philips Amara View which is very similar but has the hose in the front like a traditional style:

Ever think about getting the deviated septum fixed?

I didn't know mine was deviated till last year. After the surgery, I can breath a hell of a lot better but still need my CPAP. I should clarify, my ENT took a marble sized tumor out of my left nasal cavity as well....

Going for my next sleep study at the end of the week to see if I need my pressure updated.

That was also something I did when I started down the road to address snoring and having a sleep study. One other option presented to me was scarfing out the rear portion of the roof of my mouth(presumably as part of my obstructive apnea). What anecdotal feedback I had, discouraged me from pursuing that part of the treatment, and my ENT at the time didn’t push that any further sensing my lack of enthusiasm. Fixing the deviated septum was worthwhile even though it didn’t preclude needing a CPAP.

One more mundane issue I had to deal with was the neoprene head gear. At times I would develop a zit/pimple under the head gear and hair interface. Looking on one of the sleep apnea forums showed people selling fleece fabric wraps for wrapping around the head gear for comfort and to allowing the area to breathe at night. My approach was to get a simple Walmart sweat band and thread it over the headgear.....
