Any of you guys use Apple's Square?

We have in our restaurants and I am running into an issue because it seems life every employee has access to do just about anything. Including:
- Changing the names of products
- Changing the prices of products
- Adding/eliminating products from the home screen

Certainly there has to be a layered security function so that each employee can have their own access number, and only be able to complete certain functions with it?

With Square POS, you have the ability to create "accounts" for individual employees. Then you can set permissions for each individual so they can update items, or exclude them from making any changes.

If you are sharing a login, that's most likely your issue.

Note, it's not "Apple's Square." It's Square POS application that can run on Apple iOS devices or Android devices.

Also ... click the link below for instructions on employee management including creating employee roles and assigning permission.

If you are using the free, single administrator account for everyone ... that's certainly the issue since that "admin" account can edit/add/delete anything and everything.

Adding employees is something like $5 per employee per month. Having individual accounts per employee is ideal for tracking and may become very important at some point. As an options, you can create one or two additional employee accounts and share them between employees and ensure those accounts do not have role permissions to make any changes.

If you have a high volume you are getting killed on the transaction costs with square. They are great for a small business with a couple of transactions per month, but if you have any volume at all you could save many thousands of dollars per year with a different solution.

In the meantime, here's an article with instructions on how to set up employee permissions and roles:

Would you share a little more insight on this?

My understanding is that Square does not charge for cash transactions, only credit cards - and they charge a flat fee of 2.75% per card swipe (3.50% + $0.15 keyed), regardless of the card used.

All I can advise is to shop around. Square is considered to be a very high percentage at 2.75%. It's all about volume. If you do $10,000 per month in credit card transactions as a micro business, that's at least $3,300 per year at 2.75%. If you're a small business doing $1 million a year, that's $28,000 per year. If you were able to cut the fees in half (not unreasonable) would that be worth it to you?

It really all depends on how much volume you do.

I sent an email to your forum email address with some more information. Steve nailed it. Those little percentages add up and based on your volume you could stand to save thousands of dollars per year. It does depend on the types of transactions and the volume, but I know one business that owned several fast food restaurants that saved over $50K per year after changing their processor.

Bama, I received your email. Very much appreciated, I'm going to investigate.
